How Long Can a 3000W Generator Run?
About 2 to 25 hours on a tank. How long a 3000W generator runs comes down to its tank and your load. Here are the makers' own figures for the 3000 watt generator models we stock.
3000W Generator Run Time by Load
Every run time below is the maker's figure, as published on each product page and checked on 14 September 2026. Divide the litres a generator holds by the hours it lasts and you get its burn rate at that load.

Quarter Load (About 750W)
Quarter load on a 3000W generator is a fridge, some lights, the TV and a few chargers. That's where most camp nights and blackout evenings sit.
Here the tank does the talking. The iGen3750S and P3500 burn almost the same 0.7 litres an hour, so both give you 8 to 9 hours, which is a full night. The WC-P3750 burns a touch less and carries 15 litres, and Welling & Crossley rate it at 24.6 hours.
Half Load (About 1,500W)
Add a kettle, a microwave or a small air conditioner on a mild day and you're close to half load.
The Hyundai HY3500i empties its 6 litres in 5.5 hours at that load. The Westinghouse WHXC3750 makes the same 3,000W from a 15 litre tank and lasts 16.8 hours. Same output, three times the run time.
Heavy and Full Load
Push a small open frame generator hard and you'll be at the jerry can by smoko. Gentech rate the EP3400HSR at 2.32 hours at 80% load from 3.1 litres. Genelite publish 4 hours at 60% and 2.7 hours flat out for the GH2700.
Don't plan to live up there anyway. Queensland's Electrical Safety Office says your generator should not run continuously at more than 80 per cent of its rated capacity.

Inverter vs Open Frame Engines
An inverter generator winds its engine back when you're drawing less. Westinghouse explains in its FAQ that inverters vary engine speed to match demand, while standard generators run constantly at full speed.
The WHXC3750 open frame still outlasts the inverters, and the reason is its tank. Its 15 litres is well over double the 6 to 6.3 litres in the inverters. It also weighs 52kg dry against 27kg for the iGen3750S, so you're trading carry weight for hours.
Litres per Hour at Each Load
Across these seven, quarter load burned 0.61 to 0.72 litres an hour. Half load burned 0.89 to 1.09, and heavy or full load about 1.33.
That makes a 20 litre jerry can easy to plan around. It's roughly 28 hours on the iGen3750S at quarter load, 18 hours on the HY3500i at half load, or 15 hours on the EP3400HSR at 80%. Our generator fuel consumption guide does the same sums for bigger petrol and diesel units.
Running Longer Than One Tank
Refuelling a Hot Generator
When the tank runs low, stop the generator. Westinghouse's instruction manual says never refuel while the engine's running and always let the generator cool first. Spilled fuel on hot surfaces can ignite.

ECO Throttle and Load Management
On an inverter, turn on the ECO throttle for long runs at light or medium output. Westinghouse says it cuts fuel use, noise and engine wear. Its iGen manual adds a catch: switch ECO off when starting an air conditioner or pump, so the engine has the revs for the surge.
Run the big stuff one at a time, too. Every 750W you shed moves you a row down the table, and a row down is hours back on the tank.
Choosing a 3000W Generator for Run Time
For a night at camp on a fridge and lights, any of the 6 litre inverters gets you to breakfast. For a blackout at home, or a site day you don't want to babysit, a 15 litre tank is the difference.
