Ten watts is why it can run all night
This is the number to look at before anything else. On low the 2D draws 10W, which is under an amp at 12V. Leave it running from dark to dawn and you have used less than 10Ah out of your house battery. Compare that to a 12V fan heater, which pulls 20 or 30 amps and flattens a battery inside two hours. The heat comes from diesel; the electricity only runs the fan and the pump. That split is the whole reason diesel heaters took over.
Dry heat, and what it does to your condensation
A diesel air heater burns fuel in a sealed chamber and vents the exhaust outside, so the air it blows into your van has no moisture in it. Gas heaters that vent inside put water into the air with every hour they run, which is how you end up wiping windows every morning and finding mould behind the cupboards. Running the 2D on low overnight dries your camper out while it warms it. On a wet week away, that's worth more than the warmth.
2D or 4D: which one is yours?
Go by the space, not by how cold you feel. The 2D moves up to 86 cubic metres of air an hour and suits a camper, a troopy, a ute canopy, an off-road van or a boat up to 10 metres. The 4D doubles that and suits a big motorhome, a shed or a boat up to 15 metres. Fitting a 4D to a small camper isn't a bonus: it will cycle on and off, use more fuel and cook you out. What -45 degrees really tells you
Nowhere in Australia gets to minus 45. What that rating tells you is how much margin Autoterm built in, because a heater that reliably lights at -45 will start every single time on a frosty morning in the High Country or out at Ivanhoe. The other half of it is the fuel: below about zero you want winter-grade diesel, or the diesel itself waxes before the heater has a problem. That's a fuel issue, not a heater issue.
Everything to fit it is in the box
You get the heater, the Comfort Controller, the metering pump, 5.5m of fuel pipe with a collector, the air supply pipe with an 80cm silencer, the exhaust silencer, a metre of exhaust pipe with insulation, the wiring and the full mounting set. Nothing else is needed. The install itself means drilling the floor, mounting the exhaust clear of anything that melts and tapping into your fuel tank, so unless you're confident with all three, budget for a fitter.
