The Owner's Insights on the Briggs & Stratton P3500 PowerSmart Inverter Generator

Two thousand nine hundred watts continuous, 38.6kg, and a five year warranty. That last number is the standout: five years on an inverter generator at this size is longer than almost anything else in the category.

It's recoil start only, which is the honest trade for the price and the weight. No battery to go flat between trips, nothing extra to service, and on a 171cc engine the pull is easy.

The panel is better than the price suggests: an LCD StatStation showing watts drawn, remaining runtime and maintenance reminders, plus a fuel gauge and an hour meter. Most generators leave you guessing on all four.

Why You'll Love the Briggs & Stratton P3500 PowerSmart Inverter Generator

  • 2,900W running, 3,500W peak. A camp, a caravan or a blackout at home.
  • 5-year warranty. Longer than almost anything in this class.
  • LCD StatStation. Watts drawn, runtime left and service reminders.
  • CO Guard. It shuts itself down before the air gets dangerous.
  • Recoil start. No battery to go flat between trips.
  • 38.6kg with wheels and two handles. One person moves it, no lifting.
  • About 66 dBA at 7 metres. Quiet enough for a caravan park.
  • QPT parallel compatible. Link a second one when you need more.

Five years is the number to notice

Most inverter generators at this size carry one to three years. Five years on the P3500 says something about how Briggs expect it to hold up, and it's worth real money if the machine has a hard life. Weigh that against the shorter warranties on cheaper units before you compare on price alone: a generator that's out of warranty in twelve months is a different proposition to one covered for five.

What the StatStation actually tells you

Four things, and each one saves you guessing. Watts drawn tells you how close to the limit you are, so you know before the breaker does. Remaining runtime tells you whether to refuel now or after dinner. The maintenance reminder tells you when a service is due. And the hour meter is what your mechanic will ask for. On a cheap generator you get none of that and you find out the hard way.

CO Guard is the feature worth understanding

Carbon monoxide from a generator kills people every year, usually because someone ran theirs in a garage, under an awning or too close to an open window. CO Guard watches the air around it and shuts your engine down before the level gets dangerous. It isn't a licence to run it indoors, and you should still keep it well clear of doors, windows and enclosed spaces. What it catches is the situation you didn't think was risky.

Recoil only: is that a problem for you?

There's no electric start on this model. That's why it's lighter and cheaper than the P4500, and on a 171cc engine the pull is genuinely easy rather than a workout. There's also no battery to go flat over a wet fortnight in the shed. If you want a button and a remote, the P4500 has both and 800 more running watts. If you don't mind a cord, this is the sensible buy.

What 2,900W covers, and where it stops

Two thousand nine hundred watts continuous covers your fridge, lights, phone and laptop charging, a TV and a kettle if nothing else is running. On a job it drives a couple of hand tools. Where it stops is a caravan air conditioner alongside everything else, an induction cooktop, or anything heavy. Add up what runs at once, use the running figure for each item, and if you're near the line the P4500 at 3,700W is the next real step.

What's Included

  • Briggs & Stratton P3500 PowerSmart inverter generator
  • 2 x 15A AC outlets, 12V DC outlet and 2 USB ports
  • LCD StatStation, fuel gauge and hour meter
  • CO Guard and low oil shutdown
  • Telescoping handle, carry handle and wheels
  • 5-year warranty

What's Not Included

  • Petrol
  • Extension leads
  • The QPT parallel kit and a second unit

It arrives ready to run once you add fuel and check the oil. The wheels and both handles are built in, so nothing extra is needed to move it around a camp or a site.

Not Sure Which Inverter Generator Suits You?

The P3500 suits you if you want clean quiet power for a camp, a caravan or a blackout, with a five year warranty and a panel that tells you what's going on. It's the wrong pick if you want a start button or more headroom, where the P4500 gives you both, or if you're powering a working site, where the P7500 is the machine. It carries a 5-year warranty.
