The Owner's Insights on the RUA 8508X
I have handled a fair few caravan fridges. The absorption ones still earn their keep, and it comes down to one thing.
Gas. Park up where there is no mains power and no decent sun, and this fridge keeps running off a bottle of LPG. There is no compressor and no fan, so it makes no noise at all. You will forget it is there.
The 8508X is the big one in the range. 216 litres across two doors, with a proper freezer up top. That is a week of food for a family and room left over for your beers.
It is not a small unit. 550mm wide, 1661mm tall and 73kg on the scales. It gets cut into your van wall with a vent and a flue, so a licensed gas fitter installs it, not you on a Sunday.
Who is it for? Long trips off-grid where power points are rare. If you stay on powered sites, a compressor fridge will suit you better.
Why You'll Love the RUA 8508X
- Runs on gas, 240V or 12V. Use whichever you have got that day and your food stays cold, powered site or not.
- 216 litres across two doors. Your fresh food sits below and the freezer sits up top behind its own door.
- Automatic mains switching. Plug into 240V and the fridge swaps off 12V by itself, so that is one less thing to remember.
- T-rated cooling unit. That is the tropical rating, which is what a Queensland summer actually is.
- Double-hinged door. It opens left or right with no hinge swap, so your van layout decides, not the fridge.
- Colour TFT control panel. One screen with clear icons, so you can see the setting at a glance.

Why You Should Consider a Dometic Caravan Fridge
Dometic has built RV refrigeration for decades, and its absorption units are what most Australian caravan makers fit at the factory. Parts and authorised service agents are easy to find here. On a fridge you will keep for fifteen years, that support matters more than the sticker price. See the rest of the Dometic range.

How a three-way absorption fridge works
There is no compressor in this fridge. A heat source boils an ammonia and water mix, and that vapour moves around a sealed circuit to pull heat out of the cabinet. The heat comes from a gas burner, a 240V element or a 12V element. Nothing moves, so nothing rattles and nothing wears out. That is why these fridges run silently, and why owners hang on to them for so long.
Dometic RUA 8508X dimensions and cut-out
The cabinet is 550mm wide, 1661mm tall and 667mm deep, and it weighs 73kg empty. Take your cut-out and ventilation sizes off the Dometic installation manual before you order, because the flue and the vents have to line up with your wall. Your caravan builder or gas fitter will want those numbers first. Shipping weight is 78kg, so plan on two people at delivery.
Absorption or compressor, which suits your setup
Absorption runs on gas, so you are not leaning on your battery bank at all. A compressor fridge only runs on power, but it pulls the temperature down faster and uses less energy per litre. If you tour off-grid for weeks and the sun is not guaranteed, gas wins. If you have a big lithium and solar setup and you camp in the open, a compressor unit is the better fit.

Not Sure Which Caravan Fridge Suits You?
If you tour as a couple and you do not need a week of food on board, the RUA 6508X at 180 litres saves you money and 210mm of wall height. Step up to the 8508X when you are feeding a family for a fortnight. The honest catch is that this is a built-in appliance, not something you drop in yourself. It runs on LPG, so a licensed gas fitter has to install it and certify the gas work, and that cost sits on top of the fridge. Your rights under Australian Consumer Law apply alongside the manufacturer warranty. Browse the rest of our RV fridges before you decide.
