The Owner's Insights on the RUC5308X
The RUC5308X is the small one, and it's the one I point people at more often than you'd expect.
146 litres in a cabinet 1195mm tall. That suits your pop-top, your small van or a camper where the big uprights simply won't go.
It's a single outer door with the freezer behind its own internal door. You open one door, and your frozen gear stays sealed until you want it.
Being a compressor fridge, levelling your van isn't a problem. Neither is a hot afternoon. That's the whole reason you'd move off a three-way.
The freezer is 13 litres, which is a bag of peas and some meat, not a week of your frozen dinners. Worth knowing before you commit.
Who's it for? You, if you're a weekender or a couple, or if your cabinet is short. If you tour for months and cook properly, look at the 180L RUC6508X instead.
Why You'll Love the RUC5308X
- Runs on 12V, 24V and 240V. Plug in at a caravan park and it changes over on its own, nothing to remember.
- Double-hinged door. Opens from either side with no hinge swap, so a tight van layout stops mattering.
- T climate class. Rated for 16 to 43 degrees ambient, so a hot afternoon doesn't beat it.
- Freezer behind its own internal door. The frozen stuff stays frozen while you're rummaging for the milk.
- Fits a short cabinet. At 1195mm tall it goes where the bigger uprights can't.
- Battery cut-out built in. It stops at 10.4V rather than draining your house battery flat.

Why You Should Consider a Dometic Compressor Fridge
Dometic build more RV refrigerators than anyone, and the RUC line is their AU and NZ upright range. It's stocked through caravan dealers all over Australia, so parts and authorised service agents are close by. On a fridge that gets cut into your van and stays there a decade, that support matters more than the sticker price. See the rest of the Dometic range.

Why a compressor fridge beats a three-way in a small van
In a small van your fridge sits close to everything. A three-way needs external vents, a flue and your van sitting reasonably level to work properly. A compressor fridge works like your kitchen fridge and needs none of that. Dometic rate their compressor models for stable cooling and freezing even when tilted, and this one carries a T climate class for 16 to 43 degrees ambient. In your pop-top or camper, parked wherever there's shade, that's worth more than the gas option you're giving up.
What the RUC5308X draws from your battery
Dometic rate it at 88W, drawing 7.3A at 12V or 3.65A at 24V while the compressor runs. It cycles rather than running flat out, so your daily figure comes down to the heat and how often you open the door. The fridge cuts out at 10.4V and won't restart until your battery recovers to 11.7V, so it can't drain your house battery to nothing. Call the store with your battery and solar setup and you'll get an honest answer on whether it's enough.
Fitting the RUC5308X into a short cabinet
At 1195mm tall and 550mm wide, this is the one that fits where the others don't. Your opening needs 525 x 1181mm clear without the flange and 611mm of depth behind it. It still gets cut into your cabinet, wired to 12V and fixed down against corrugations, and at 42kg it's a two-person lift. Your installer works from Dometic's installation and operating manual for cabinet size, clearance and fixings. Measure your opening before you order, because 550mm width is the dimension you can't work around.
Silver handles or black handles
Same 146 litres, same controls, same everything except the handle finish. Silver goes with alloy trim, black goes with a dark kitchen. Pick whichever matches your van.

Not Sure Which Upright Fridge Suits Your Van?
The RUC5308X is the smallest of the three RUC uprights, and for a lot of vans it is plenty. If you cook properly and tour for months at a time, the 180L RUC6508X and 216L RUC8508X use the same 550mm width and just add height, and they carry a 46 litre freezer against this one's 13. They all sit together in our RV fridges. The honest catch is noise. Compressor fridges hum when they cycle, three-way fridges do not, and in a small van you sit closer to it. Dometic back this one for three years against manufacturing defects, alongside your Australian Consumer Law rights.
