The Owner's Insights on the RUC6404X
This is the 180 litre RU Core, and it's the size that suits most vans.
Read this bit before anything else. It runs on 12V and 24V DC only. No 240V input, and no changeover when you plug into a powered site. Your battery feeds the fridge and your charger feeds the battery.
That's how Dometic get the price down. On a van with a decent battery and charger you'll never think about it again.
The rest is good gear. T climate class, a fan tuned to run quietly rather than cycling on and off all night, and 134 litres of fridge under a 46 litre freezer.
Who's it for? A new build or a proper rewire. If you want the fridge to run straight off mains at a caravan park, buy the RUC6508X instead.
Why You'll Love the RUC6404X
- T climate class. Dometic rate it for ambient temperatures from 16 to 43 degrees, so a hot afternoon doesn't beat it.
- Internal ventilation option. Dometic sell an internal vent kit for this range, so you may not need vents cut in your van wall.
- Quiet fan with no auto shut-off. The fan runs steadily instead of clattering on and off through the night.
- Soft-touch electronic control. Set the temperature with a press. No fiddly dial to guess at.
- Automatic LED interior light. You can see what's in there without holding a torch in your teeth.
- Battery cut-out built in. It shuts down at 10.4V so it can't flatten your house battery on you.

Why You Should Consider a Dometic Compressor Fridge
Dometic have built RV refrigerators for decades, and RU Core is the value end of their own range rather than another company's product wearing their badge. Same Australian parts network, same authorised service agents. On an appliance you cut into your van and keep for a decade, being able to get a part in five years time is what actually matters. The RUC6404X runs on 12V and 24V only
Get this straight before you order. Dometic's own manual for this range says the RUC5204X, RUC6404X and RUC8404X are suitable for use with a 12V or 24V supply, and the manual has no section on connecting to AC power at all. There is no 240V plug and no automatic changeover on a powered site. Your house battery runs the fridge and your charger runs the battery. In a van with a proper power-management system that converts incoming mains to DC, you will never notice. In an older van with a tired battery and a basic charger, you will. If you want mains-direct operation, buy the RUC6508X instead.
Compressor or three-way in a touring van
A three-way fridge makes cold by heating ammonia. It wants the van level, and its performance drops off as the outside air heats up. A compressor fridge works like your kitchen fridge. Dometic rate their compressor models for stable cooling and freezing even in a tilted position, and this one carries a T climate class for 16 to 43 degrees ambient. You lose the gas option. You gain a fridge that copes with a sloping campsite and a hot day.
What the RUC6404X draws from your batteries
Dometic rate it at 88W, drawing 7.3A at 12V or 3.65A at 24V while the compressor runs. It cycles rather than running flat out, so heat and door openings drive the daily figure. The fridge cuts out at 10.4V and stays off until the battery recovers to 11.7V, which protects your battery but also means an undersized bank leaves you with warm food. Because this one can't run direct off mains, the battery matters more than it does on the RUC6508X.
Fitting the RUC6404X
This gets cut into your cabinetry, wired into the 12V system and fixed down so corrugations don't move it. At 46kg it's a two-person lift. The opening needs 525 x 1434mm clear without the flange and 611mm of depth behind it. Dometic sell a ventilation grille, a roof vent kit and an internal vent kit for this range, and your installer picks the right one for your van. We won't publish wiring or fuse sizes here, because that's a call for your installer against Dometic's manual and your van's existing system.

Not Sure Which Upright Fridge Suits Your Van?
The RUC6404X is 180 litres at a sharper price, and the missing 240V input is the reason it costs less. On a van with a healthy battery and charger that will never bother you. If it would, step across to the RUC6508X, which runs on 12V, 24V and 240V and switches over by itself. Need more room? The 216L RUC8404X is the same fridge in a taller body. They all sit together in our RV fridges. Dometic back this one for three years against manufacturing defects, and your Australian Consumer Law rights sit alongside that.
