The Owner's Insights on the RUC6408X
The RUC6408X is the previous generation of Dometic's 188 litre upright, and this is the last of them.
It does the same job as the current RUC6508X. Compressor cooling, dual voltage, double-hinged door, colour screen. The control on this one is a rotary touch dial rather than the newer panel.
The differences are small but real. It uses R134a refrigerant instead of R600a, it's 10mm deeper, and a bottom trim comes in the box.
Being a compressor fridge, it holds its temperature on a slope and in the heat. Park your van wherever the shade is and stop thinking about it.
Who's it for? You, if you're replacing a fridge in an older van and you're happy with a superseded model at a lower price. Dometic have discontinued it, so what you see here is what's left.
Why You'll Love the RUC6408X
- Runs on 12V, 24V and 240V. Plug into mains at a park and it changes over on its own.
- Rotary touch control with colour TFT. One dial, a clear screen, and no menus to fight with.
- Double-hinged door. Opens from either side without changing the hinge over.
- T-rated cooling system. Dometic rate it for tropical conditions, so heat isn't the problem it is with a three-way.
- Separate freezer with its own door. The frozen gear stays frozen while you're getting the milk out.
- Bottom trim supplied. One less part for your installer to order before the job starts.

Why You Should Consider a Dometic Compressor Fridge
Dometic have built RV refrigeration longer than most caravan brands have existed. The RUC line has sold through Australian caravan dealers for years, so parts and authorised service agents are close to hand even on a superseded model. That is the practical reason to stay with the brand rather than chase an unknown one. Browse the rest of the Dometic range.

What changed between the RUC6408X and the current RUC6508X
Both are 188 litre dual-zone compressor uprights, 550mm wide, dual voltage with automatic DC to AC switching, and both use a double-hinged door. That 188 is the gross figure Dometic leads with; the IEC 62552-3 usable volume is 180 litres on both. The RUC6408X runs R134a refrigerant and the newer RUC6508X runs R600a. The cabinet is 1447mm tall on this one against 1451mm, and 677mm deep against 667mm. Dometic list this one with EMC, CB and RCM certification, and it ships with a bottom trim that the newer model does not.
Compressor or three-way in a caravan
A three-way fridge makes cold by heating ammonia. It wants the van level, and it struggles as the outside air heats up. A compressor fridge works like your kitchen fridge. Dometic rate their compressor models for stable cooling and freezing even when tilted, and for holding performance when ambient temperatures head for the extremes. The trade is that you lose gas as a power source, and you gain a fridge that doesn't care about a sloping campsite or a 40 degree day.
What the RUC6408X draws from your batteries
Off mains, the compressor runs on your house battery. Dometic publish a rated AC input of 75W and 1.0A of AC current for this model, and no 12V daily consumption figure. Anything you see quoted online is somebody's estimate rather than a Dometic spec. Call the store with your battery capacity and your solar, and you'll get a straight answer on whether your setup carries it.
Fitting the RUC6408X
It's an installed appliance, cut into your cabinet, wired to 12V and fixed down for corrugations. At 48kg it needs two people. Dometic's installation and operating manual holds the cabinet, clearance and fixing requirements, and that's the document your installer works from. You won't find wiring or fuse sizes on this page, because that's your installer's call against the manual and your van's system. Measure your existing cabinet opening before you order.

Not Sure Which Upright Fridge Suits Your Van?
This is a superseded model and stock is limited, so check availability before you book your fit-out date. If you would rather have the current generation, the RUC6508X is the same capacity on R600a refrigerant, and you can compare the two in the RV fridges. The honest catch on every compressor fridge is noise. It hums when the compressor cycles, where a three-way fridge is silent. Dometic back this one for three years against manufacturing defects, and your Australian Consumer Law rights sit alongside that.
