The Owner's Insights on the RUC6508X

The RUC6508X is the middle child of the RUC range, and it's the one most vans end up with.

You get 180 litres in a cabinet 1451mm tall. That's 210mm shorter than the big RUC8508X, which is often the difference between fitting and not fitting.

It's a compressor fridge, so being level doesn't matter. Pull up on the side of a track, leave the van hitched, and it holds its temperature.

The door swings either way. There's no hinge kit to buy and no drilling if you decide the other side works better once it's in.

The freezer is 46 litres, same as the big one. So you only lose fridge space going down a size, not freezer space.

Who's it for? A couple or a small family touring for weeks at a time. If you're two-up doing weekends, the 146L RUC5308X is enough fridge and it costs you less.

Why You'll Love the RUC6508X

  • Runs on 12V, 24V and 240V. Plug into mains at a caravan park and it switches over on its own, no switch to flick.
  • Double-hinged door. It opens from either side without changing the hinge, so your van layout stops being a problem.
  • T climate class. Dometic rate it for ambient temperatures from 16 to 43 degrees, so it keeps working when the van is baking.
  • Separate freezer with its own door. Grab ice without dumping the cold out of the whole cabinet.
  • Colour TFT control panel. Set your temperature and read it at a glance, no guessing at dial numbers.
  • Battery cut-out built in. It stops itself at 10.4V so it can't flatten your house battery and leave you stranded.

Why You Should Consider a Dometic Compressor Fridge

Dometic have been building RV refrigeration since long before caravans got fancy. The RUC line is their AU and NZ upright range, and it sells through caravan dealers right across the country. That matters when something needs a part in five years time. Authorised service agents here know these units. Browse the rest of the Dometic range.

Compressor or three-way for a touring van

Three-way fridges cool with heat and ammonia. They want the van level, and they slow down as the outside air heats up. A compressor fridge works the same way your kitchen fridge does. Dometic rate their compressor models for stable cooling and freezing even in a tilted position, and this one carries a T climate class covering 16 to 43 degrees ambient. So you lose gas as a power option, and you gain a fridge that doesn't sulk in the heat or on a slope. For most people touring inland Australia that's the right trade.

What the RUC6508X asks of your battery

It's rated at 88W, pulling 7.3A at 12V or 3.65A at 24V while the compressor is running. The compressor cycles rather than running constantly, so your real daily draw depends on ambient heat and how often the door opens. The fridge protects your battery by cutting out at 10.4V and staying off until it recovers to 11.7V. Undersized batteries are the single most common reason people are disappointed with a compressor fridge. Tell us what you're running and we'll work through it.

Fitting the RUC6508X

This fridge is cut into your van cabinetry, wired to 12V and fixed down so it survives corrugations. It weighs 47kg, so it's a two-person job. The opening needs 525 x 1438mm clear without the flange, and 611mm of depth behind the flange face. Dometic's installation and operating manual carries the full cabinet, clearance and fixing requirements, and your installer works to that document rather than to a web page. We won't quote wiring or fuse sizes here.

Silver handles or black handles

Identical fridge either way. The handle finish is the only change. Silver picks up the alloy trim in older vans. Black sits quietly in a dark modern kitchen. Choose on what's already in your van.

What's Included

  • Dometic RUC6508X refrigerator
  • Installation and operating manual

What's Not Included

  • Installation and cabinetry
  • 12V wiring, fusing and cabling
  • Ventilation grille or roof vent kit
  • Decor door panel
  • Delivery to a fitter

Dometic ship this one as the unit plus the manual. Ventilation grilles, roof vent kits and internal vent kits are separate Dometic accessories. Confirm your cabinet opening with your caravan repairer before you order.

Not Sure Which Upright Fridge Suits Your Van?

The RUC6508X is the middle size. Step up to the 216L RUC8508X if you have the cabinet height and you tour for months. Drop to the 146L RUC5308X if the van is small or the budget is tight. All three sit together in our RV fridges. The honest catch on every compressor fridge is noise, because the compressor cycles and you can hear it. A three-way fridge is silent. Dometic back this one for three years against manufacturing defects, and your Australian Consumer Law rights sit alongside that.
