The Owner's Insights on the RUC8404X
RU Core is Dometic's answer to price. Same 216 litres as the RUC8508X, same 550mm width, several hundred dollars less.
There's a catch and you need to know it up front. This one runs on 12V and 24V DC only. There is no 240V input. Plug the van into mains at a caravan park and the fridge still draws from your battery.
On a modern van that's fine, because the power-management system converts the mains to DC and keeps the battery up. On an old van with one tired battery, think hard about it.
What you get for the money is real. T climate class, a fan Dometic have tuned to run quietly instead of clattering on and off, and 170 litres of fridge with a 46 litre freezer above it.
Who's it for? A new build or a proper rewire where the 12V system is already sorted. If you want mains-direct operation, the RUC8508X is the one to buy.

The RUC8404X runs on 12V and 24V only
Get this straight before you order. Dometic's own manual for this range says the RUC5204X, RUC6404X and RUC8404X are suitable for use with a 12V or 24V supply, and the manual has no section on connecting to AC power at all. There is no 240V plug and no automatic changeover on a powered site. Your house battery runs the fridge and your charger runs the battery. In a van with a proper power-management system that converts incoming mains to DC, you will never notice. In an older van with a tired battery and a basic charger, you will. If you want mains-direct operation, buy the RUC8508X instead.
Compressor or three-way at this size
A three-way fridge cools by heating ammonia, so it wants the van level and it fades as the outside temperature climbs. A compressor fridge works the way your kitchen fridge does. Dometic rate their compressor models for stable cooling and freezing even in a tilted position, and this one carries a T climate class covering 16 to 43 degrees ambient. On a 216 litre fridge in an Australian summer that difference is the whole argument.
What the RUC8404X draws from your batteries
It's rated at 88W, pulling 7.3A at 12V or 3.65A at 24V while the compressor runs. The compressor cycles rather than running constantly, so your real daily draw comes down to ambient heat and how often the door opens. The fridge protects your battery by cutting out at 10.4V and staying off until it recovers to 11.7V. Since this model can't run direct off mains, that battery has to be up to the job all the time. Fitting the RUC8404X
It's an installed appliance, cut into the cabinet, wired into your 12V system and secured against corrugations. At 50kg and 1657mm tall it's a two-person job. The opening needs 525 x 1644mm clear without the flange and 611mm of depth behind the flange face. Dometic sell a ventilation grille, a roof vent kit and an internal vent kit for this range, and your installer decides which your van needs. We won't publish wiring or fuse sizes here. Dometic supply the drain hose, bottom trim and sealing strip in the box. Not Sure Which Upright Fridge Suits Your Van?
The RUC8404X buys you 216 litres at a lower price, and the missing 240V input is the reason it costs less. If your van has a solid battery and charger you will never notice it. If it does not, spend the extra on the RUC8508X, which runs on 12V, 24V and 240V and switches over on its own. If your cabinet is shorter, the 180L RUC6404X is the same fridge in a lower body.
