The Owner's Insights on the RUC8408X
This is the previous generation of Dometic's biggest upright, and this is the last of them.
224 litres, 1657mm tall, 550mm wide. It sits in the same sort of cabinet opening as the current RUC8508X and does the same job.
The control is a rotary touch dial with a colour screen. Plenty of blokes prefer it to the newer flat panel. One dial, no menus to dig through.
It runs R134a rather than the newer R600a, it's 10mm deeper, and a bottom trim comes in the box.
Who's it for? You, if you're replacing a full-size fridge in an older van and you don't need the latest model. Dometic have discontinued it, so once this stock goes there's no more.
Why You'll Love the RUC8408X
- Runs on 12V, 24V and 240V. Plug into mains at a park and it switches across without you touching anything.
- 224 litres with a separate freezer. Enough fridge for a family touring for months, with the freezer behind its own door.
- Rotary touch control with colour TFT. One dial and a clear screen instead of a row of buttons.
- T-rated cooling system. Dometic rate it for tropical conditions, so a hot day doesn't cost you the food.
- Double-hinged door. Swings from either side, so a tight van layout stops being a problem.
- Bottom trim supplied. Your installer has one less part to chase before the job starts.

Why You Should Consider a Dometic Compressor Fridge
Dometic started in RV refrigeration and it is still what they are known for. The RUC uprights have sold through Australian caravan dealers for years, which means parts and authorised service agents are near you even on a superseded model. On a fridge that gets cut into a wall, that support is the real value. See the rest of the Dometic range.

What changed between the RUC8408X and the current RUC8508X
Both hold 224 litres gross, both are 550mm wide and around 1660mm tall, and both are dual-zone compressor uprights with automatic DC to AC switching and a double-hinged door. By the IEC 62552-3 measure that gross figure is 216 litres of usable volume. This one uses R134a refrigerant where the newer model uses R600a. This one is 677mm deep against 667mm, and it ships with a bottom trim. Dometic list EMC, CB and RCM certification against this model. The control here is the rotary touch dial rather than the newer flat panel.
Compressor or three-way for a full-size van fridge
At this size the choice really shows. A three-way fridge cools by heating ammonia, so it wants the van level and it slows down as the ambient temperature climbs. A compressor fridge works like the one in your kitchen. Dometic rate their compressor models for stable cooling and freezing even in a tilted position, and for holding performance when ambient temperatures head for the extremes. You give up the gas option. You get a 224 litre fridge that holds its temperature on a slope in February.
What the RUC8408X asks of your 12V system
This is the biggest fridge in the range, and off mains it runs on your house battery. Dometic publish a rated AC input of 75W and 1.3A of AC current, and no 12V daily consumption figure. So don't build your battery plan on something you read on a forum. Ring the store with your battery bank and your solar, and you'll get it worked through properly before you commit.
Fitting the RUC8408X
It's cut into your cabinet, wired into 12V and fixed so it doesn't shift on corrugations. At 53kg it's a two-person lift, and awkward with it. Dometic's installation and operating manual sets the cabinet, clearance and fixing requirements and your installer works to that. You won't find wiring or fuse sizes on this page. Measure your cabinet opening before you order, especially against the 1657mm height.

Not Sure Which Upright Fridge Suits Your Van?
This model is superseded and stock is limited, so check availability before you book your fitter. If you want the current generation, the RUC8508X is the same capacity on R600a. If your cabinet is shorter, look at the 180L RUC6508X. Both sit in the RV fridges. The honest catch on every compressor fridge is noise. The compressor cycles and you hear it, where a three-way is silent. Dometic back this one for three years against manufacturing defects, and your Australian Consumer Law rights sit alongside that.
