The Owner's Insights on the RUC8508X
I've had a fair few of these through the shop. The RUC8508X is the big one in the range. It's where people land after they've had enough of a three-way fridge.
It's a compressor fridge. That means it doesn't care whether your van is dead level. Park on a slope, cook your dinner, and it keeps running.
The door is the other thing you notice. It's double-hinged, so you open it from either side without pulling the hinge apart. That matters when your van layout puts the fridge in an awkward corner.
At 550mm wide and 1661mm tall it drops into a standard upright cabinet. You get 216 litres, split 170 in the fridge and 46 in the freezer.
Who's it for? Anyone touring hot country who wants a proper full-size fridge in the van. If your van is small, the 146L RUC5308X will do you and save you a fair bit.

Compressor or three-way: what the RUC8508X gives you
A three-way fridge cools by heating ammonia. That process wants your van sitting level and the outside air cool. A compressor fridge works like the one in your kitchen. Dometic rate their compressor models for stable cooling and freezing even when the unit is tilted, and this one carries a T climate class for ambient temperatures from 16 to 43 degrees. That's the trade. You give up gas as a power source and you take on a bit of hum. In return the fridge holds temperature when it's 40 degrees outside and the van is parked on a slope.
What the RUC8508X draws from your 12V system
Dometic rate it at 88W, drawing 7.3A at 12V or 3.65A at 24V while the compressor runs. It doesn't run flat out all day, so your real daily figure depends on how hot it is and how often you open the door. Sensibly, it protects itself: the fridge cuts out at 10.4V and won't restart until the battery comes back to 11.7V. That stops it flattening your house battery, but it also means an undersized battery bank leaves you with warm food. Ring us with your battery and solar and we'll be straight with you.
Fitting the RUC8508X into your van
This is an installed appliance. It gets cut into a cabinet, wired into your 12V system and secured so it doesn't move on corrugations. At 51kg it isn't a one-person lift. Dometic's installation and operating manual sets out the cabinet, clearance and fixing requirements, and that manual is what your installer works from. The cabinet needs 525 x 1648mm clear without the flange. We won't state wiring or fuse sizes here, because that's your installer's call against the manual and your van's system.
Silver handles or black handles
Same fridge, same guts, same 216 litres. The only difference is the handle finish. Silver suits older van interiors with alloy trim. Black disappears into a dark modern kitchen. Pick whichever matches what's already in your van, because you'll be looking at it for a decade.
