The Owner's Insights on the Gentech EP2800HSR 2.8kVA Generator

The Honda GP200 is what you're paying for. It's the engine, not the badge on the frame, that decides whether a generator still starts on the third summer. Plenty of units at this price run a no-name motor.

Be realistic about the tank. It's 3.1 litres, and at 80% load it burns 1.34 litres an hour, which is 2.32 hours. Work it hard and you're refuelling twice a shift. Run it light and you'll get a lot longer.

It's 40kg on a rollover frame with two 15A outlets and a recoil pull start. No electric start, no remote, no fancy panel. It's a straightforward site generator for tools, lights and backup.

Why You'll Love the Gentech EP2800HSR 2.8kVA Generator

  • Honda GP200 engine. The part that decides whether it still starts in five years.
  • 2.8kVA, two 15A outlets. Your tools and your work lights on the same unit.
  • 67 dBA at seven metres. Quieter than most open frame units this size.
  • Rollover frame. Takes a knock on the ute tray or the site without damage.
  • Recoil start. Nothing electrical to go flat on you, ever.
  • Compact at 650 x 460mm. Fits behind the seat or in the corner of your shed.
  • Single phase 230V. Standard power for standard tools.
  • 40kg. Two of you lift it onto the tray without much trouble.

Why the Honda engine is the point

Generators at this size mostly differ in one place: the motor. The GP200 is Honda's own commercial-grade engine, and it's the reason this unit costs more than a supermarket generator with the same kVA on the sticker. Parts are available anywhere in the country, any small engine mechanic knows it, and it starts after sitting through a winter. If you're buying a generator you expect to still be using in five years, that's where the money should go.

Be honest about the run time

The 3.1 litre tank is small, and Gentech publish the numbers plainly: 1.34 litres an hour at 80% load, so 2.32 hours flat out. That's fine for running tools through a job where you're going back to the ute anyway. It's not a generator you set up and forget for a day. Run it lighter, at half load or less, and you'll get considerably more, but keep a jerry can with you either way.

What 2.8kVA runs

Two 15A outlets and 2.8kVA covers your work lights, a drill, a grinder and a battery charger, or a decent chunk of a house through a blackout. Where it stops is anything with a big motor starting up: a compressor or a welder wants a lot more headroom than this has. Add up what you actually run at once, and if a big surge is in that list, look further up the range.

Recoil start and what it means for you

There's no electric start and no battery on this one. You pull it. That's a limitation if you're starting it ten times a day, and an advantage if it sits in the shed for six months at a time, because there's no battery to go flat and no starter motor to seize. For most people buying at this size, the simplicity is worth more than the convenience.

Is this the right generator for you?

Buy it if you want a compact, Honda-powered unit for tools, lights and occasional backup, and you don't mind refuelling it. It's the wrong pick if you want to run sensitive electronics or camp in a park, where an inverter generator gives you clean, quiet power instead. Not sure what size you need? Try the Generator Finder, or call the store on 03 7056 6732 and we'll size it against your gear.

What's Included

  • Gentech EP2800HSR 2.8kVA generator
  • Rollover frame

What's Not Included

  • Fuel and engine oil
  • Extension leads
  • A cover, if it's going to live outside

Check the oil before your first start, and have fuel on hand: the 3.1 litre tank doesn't come filled. If you're wiring it into a house or a shed, get a licensed electrician to fit a changeover switch: never backfeed through a wall socket.

Not Sure Which Petrol Generator Suits You?

The EP2800HSR suits you if you want a compact Honda-powered generator for tools, lights and backup, and the small tank isn't a problem for how you'll use it. It's the wrong pick if you need a long run time or clean power for electronics, where a bigger tank or an inverter generator is the answer. Not sure what size you need? Try the Generator Finder, or call the store on 03 7056 6732 and we'll work it out with you.
