The Owner's Insights on the Thule Omnistor 9200 Electric Awning

The 9200 is the big one: three metres of projection, which is more undercover ground than anything else Thule make. On a hot afternoon that's the difference between a strip of shade against the van and a genuine outdoor room you can put a table in.

It's motorised on 230V with a remote, so you press a button rather than winding. That matters more than it sounds on a six metre awning, where the manual version is a real job every time you set up and pack down.

One sizing point to get right before you order. The size in the name is the length of the cassette, and the fabric is 180mm shorter than that. Measure the flat run on your van, then check it against the cassette length, not the fabric. Ring us if you're not sure and we'll work it out with you.

Why You'll Love the Thule Omnistor 9200 Electric Awning

  • 3 metre projection. The biggest undercover area Thule build, so you get a real outdoor room.
  • 230V motor with a remote. Out and away at the push of a button, no winding.
  • Adjustable roof pitch. Set the angle so your van door still opens underneath it.
  • Spring arms with steel cable. The fabric stays taut and stable when the wind gets up.
  • Anti-rattle and brake system. Quiet on the road, and it stays shut when you're driving.
  • LED lighting ready. Thule LED strips fit it, so you can light the space at night.

Why You Should Consider a Thule Caravan Awning

Measuring for the right size

This is the thing people get wrong, so read it before you order. The size on the awning is the length of the cassette, which is the box that bolts to your van. The fabric that comes out of it is 180mm shorter. So a 5.0m awning gives you 4.82m of shade. Measure the flat, unobstructed run on the side of your van, allowing for doors, windows, vents and anything else in the way, then match that against the cassette length. If you're between sizes or unsure, call the store on 03 7056 6732 before you order rather than after.

Why 3 metres of projection changes things

Most caravan awnings give you two to two and a half metres, which shades the wall of the van and a narrow strip of ground. Three metres puts a table, chairs and everyone around it fully undercover, and it keeps the sun off the van wall for longer through the afternoon. It's also enough depth that rain running off the edge lands well clear of where you're sitting.

Electric or manual: is the motor worth it?

On a small awning, arguably not. On a 5 or 6 metre awning with 3 metres of projection, it's a different question. That's a lot of fabric and a lot of winding, twice a day, every setup and pack-down. The 230V motor and remote turn a two-minute job into a five-second one, and it means anyone can operate it rather than whoever's strongest. It needs a 230V supply, so a powered site, a generator or an inverter.

Holding up in the wind

The spring arms are reinforced with a double steel cable and deploy a tension rafter automatically, which is what keeps the fabric flat rather than flapping. That said, no awning is a windproof structure: if it comes up seriously, wind it in. The built-in brake system means it won't creep open on the road, and the anti-rattle device stops the cassette buzzing while you're driving.

What's Included

  • Thule Omnistor 9200 awning in your chosen length
  • 230V motor
  • Remote control
  • Installation instructions

What's Not Included

  • Professional installation and mounting brackets for your vehicle
  • Thule LED lighting strip
  • A 230V power source: powered site, generator or inverter

Mounting brackets are vehicle-specific and are ordered separately, so talk to your installer about what your van needs. It runs on 230V, so you need a powered site, a caravan generator or an inverter to operate it off-grid.

Not Sure Which Caravan Awning Suits You?

The Omnistor 9200 suits you if you have a larger caravan or motorhome and you want the biggest shaded area available, operated at the push of a button. It's the wrong pick if your van has a short flat run on the side, or if you don't have 230V available where you camp. Not sure which length fits your van, or how it should be mounted? Call the store on 03 7056 6732, or send an SMS to 0476 330 590 and we'll measure it up with you before you order.
