The Owner's Insights on the Westinghouse iGen4500AS Inverter Generator
The AS in the name is the whole story: automatic start. This one has a two-wire control system, so a transfer switch or an off-grid solar controller can start it, run it and stop it without you being there.
That makes it a different animal from a normal caravan generator. On a rural block where the solar bank runs low overnight, this kicks in on its own, tops the batteries up and shuts down again. You find out it ran by looking at the hour meter.
It's 4,500W starting and 3,700W running out of a 224cc engine, on a 13.5 litre tank that gives up to 17.8 hours at quarter load. Never-flat wheels and a pull handle mean you position it once and leave it there.
Why You'll Love the Westinghouse iGen4500AS Inverter Generator
- Two-wire automatic start. Your transfer switch or solar controller starts and stops it without you.
- 4,500W starting, 3,700W running. Enough for your van's air conditioner or the essentials at home.
- Push-button and wired remote start. Start it by hand when you want to, automatically when you don't.
- Up to 17.8 hours at quarter load. The 13.5 litre tank runs overnight and well into the next day.
- Pure sine wave output. Safe for your laptop, your CPAP and anything with a circuit board.
- Never-flat wheels. You wheel it into position and it stays where you put it.

Why You Should Consider a Westinghouse Inverter Generator
Westinghouse have been putting their name on generators for a long time, and the iGen range is their quiet inverter line. The AS model is the one built to run itself. It carries a 2-year domestic warranty with support here in Australia. See the rest of the Westinghouse range.

What two-wire automatic start actually does
A two-wire control system lets another device start the generator by closing a circuit. In practice that means an automatic transfer switch on a house, or an off-grid solar inverter watching your battery level. When the grid drops or the batteries hit a set point, the generator starts, does its job, and shuts down when it's no longer needed. Nobody walks outside. On a rural property, or a place you aren't always at, that's the difference between having backup and having a generator sitting in the shed.
Will it run a caravan air conditioner?
Yes for most vans. Air conditioners pull two to three times their running wattage for a moment as the compressor kicks in, which is what trips smaller units. At 4,500W of starting headroom over 3,700W running, this absorbs that spike comfortably. Check your air conditioner's rating and ring the store on 03 7056 6732 if you want us to run the numbers with you.
How long will it run on a tank?
Westinghouse rate it at up to 17.8 hours at quarter load from the 13.5 litre tank. Quarter load is a fridge, lights and your devices. Run the air conditioner or a real house load and you'll be refuelling a lot sooner than that. If it's doing automatic backup duty, check the fuel level as part of your regular walk-around rather than assuming it's full.
Solar backup or caravan use?
It does both, but the automatic start is what you're paying extra for, and that only earns its keep in a fixed installation. If you're touring and starting it by hand anyway, the iGen4750s gives you more output and a wireless remote for the same money. Buy this one if it's going to be wired into something that starts it for you.
What's Included
- Westinghouse iGen4500AS inverter generator
- Wired remote control
- User manual
What's Not Included
- Fuel
- Automatic transfer switch and its wiring
- Extension leads
- A cover, if it's going to live outside
The two-wire terminal is on the generator, but the transfer switch or solar controller that drives it is a separate purchase and a licensed electrician's job. If you're wiring it into a house, never backfeed through a wall socket.
Not Sure Which Inverter Generator Suits You?
The iGen4500AS suits you if you want backup power that starts itself: a rural property, an off-grid solar bank, or a house you aren't always at. It's the wrong pick if you're touring and starting it by hand anyway, where the iGen4750s gives you more output for the same money. It carries a 2-year Westinghouse domestic warranty.
