Petrol vs Diesel Generator: How Petrol Generators and Diesels Compare on Price, Fuel and Engine Life
In the petrol vs diesel generator call, petrol suits camping and the odd blackout at about half the price. Diesel pays off only on long runs under steady load. Here's where the line falls across our generators.
That's the short answer. If your generator will mostly sit in the shed waiting for a storm, you can stop here and buy petrol. If yours will work most days, keep reading.
Petrol vs Diesel Generator Differences in Price, Fuel and Weight
The fairest test for you is two like-for-like pairs, same brand and same size class, both sold here. Every figure below comes from the product pages, checked on 11 September 2026.

Purchase Price for the Same kVA
About double. The Gentech diesel costs you $2,570 more than its petrol twin, and the Hyundai diesel costs you $1,984.40 more.
Owners notice that gap before anything else. A Whirlpool member shopping for home backup found petrol units at about a quarter the price of diesel, though that compared budget petrol with mid-range diesel. On like-for-like units your gap is closer to two times.
Keep that extra $2,000-odd in your head. Most of what follows is about whether you'll ever earn it back.
Fuel Efficiency, Litres per Hour and per kWh
Diesel wins, and the margin depends on which pair you compare.
On the Gentech pair at 80% load, the diesel burns roughly 30% less fuel an hour. On the Hyundai pair, worked out per kilowatt-hour from each page's tank size and runtime, the petrol uses 0.92 litres per kWh and the diesel 0.43, which is 53% less. So your honest range is roughly 30% to 55% less fuel, and the flat 50% you'll see quoted elsewhere only fits some pairs.
Your pump price claws some of that back. On 2 September 2026, petrol averaged $2.05 a litre and diesel $2.49 across the five largest cities, according to the ACCC figures on fuelplan.gov.au. That makes diesel about 21% dearer per litre.
Diesel still comes out ahead for you. Across the stocked units that publish their fuel use, the median diesel uses 0.43 L/kWh and the median petrol 0.73. At those early September 2026 prices, each kilowatt-hour costs you about $1.08 on diesel and $1.49 on petrol, so diesel is roughly 28% cheaper to power your gear.
Weight and Portability
Petrol is lighter. The Gentech diesel weighs 35kg more than its petrol twin, and the Hyundai diesel 73.1kg more.
That's the gap between two of you lifting it into your ute and a job for a forklift or tailgate loader. Touring owners feel it most. On ExplorOz, a member planning a diesel-only touring truck found the small diesels much heavier and noisier than a Honda 2kVA, and expected to end up with a Honda and a jerry can.
Noise Levels at 7 Metres, Open Frame vs Silenced Canopy
Usually petrol is quieter, but the box around the engine matters more to your ears than the fuel inside it.
The open-frame Gentech petrol is rated 69 dBA at 7 metres and the Hyundai petrol 73 dB(A). The silenced Hyundai diesels sit right alongside them, at 72 dB for the DHY8700SE-LRS and 74 dB(A) for the smaller DHY6000SE. An open-frame diesel like the Gentech ED6800YSRE-3 is rated 80 dBA.
Load changes what you hear, too. A Whirlpool member who owns a Kubota diesel says his Honda 2kW petrol inverter is very noisy at full load, not much different to the Kubota, even though it purrs on a camp light. If noise is your worry, give a silenced diesel canopy a look before you rule diesel out.
Engine Life, 3,000 rpm and Servicing
Diesel usually lasts longer, though not every diesel does.
On that same Whirlpool thread, members credit the long-life reputation to slow 1,500 rpm diesels. The portable Gentech diesels sold here, with Lister Petter and Yanmar engines, turn at 3,000 rpm, and one member comparing units said twice the revs can be expected to mean less engine life and more vibration. Another member's Kubota is closing in on 2,000 trouble-free hours after about ten years.
Good petrol engines go the distance as well. One Whirlpool member still uses the Honda 2kVA he bought 18 years ago.
Your warranty tells you what the maker expects. Hyundai covers the HY9000LEK petrol for 1 year or 100 hours, and its silenced diesels for 12 months or 500 hours. Whichever you buy, owners on the Kubota thread advise changing your oil every year even if it barely gets used, and keeping the battery charged so it fires when you need it.
Fuel Storage Life and Flammability
Diesel keeps better, and it's the safer fuel to keep in your shed.
BP Australia's fuel storage fact sheet gives petrol a year in a sealed container under shelter. Once opened, that drops to six months at 20°C or three months at 30°C, and in your generator's own tank it's about one month. Diesel doesn't evaporate like petrol, and BP says its storage problems are gums and sediment that block filters, plus water from condensation in opened containers.
Diesel also needs real heat before it gives off vapour that can catch. BP's Australian safety data sheet for diesel puts its flash point above 61.5°C and classes it as a combustible liquid under AS 1940.
Whatever you buy, never use it indoors or in an enclosed space. Energy Safe Victoria warns that the carbon monoxide can't be seen or smelt and can kill very quickly, so keep yours outside where the fumes clear.
Disadvantages of Diesel Generators
Diesel's worst downsides don't show on your spec sheet, and these are the ones that catch buyers out.
Light Loads and Wet Stacking
A storm knocks your power out at 9pm. You fire up the 10kVA diesel you bought to be safe, and it spends the night powering your fridge and a few lights.
That's a tiny load for a big engine. Do it outage after outage and your engine never works hard enough to burn its fuel cleanly.
Owners describe what comes next. On Whirlpool, a former telephone exchange tech recalled a crew who did monthly diesel test runs without switching the load over, until the engine was burning oil through glazed bores. Another member warned that a diesel big enough for your aircon will glaze its bores when the aircon's off.
Caterpillar puts a number on it. Its paper on generator set underloading says a diesel working below 30% of its rated output for long periods suffers wet stacking, where unburned fuel and oil leak out as a black, oily slobber. It recommends loading the set to at least 30% for about 30 minutes for every four hours of light use. Caterpillar writes for big standby sets, and Whirlpool owners describe the same trouble on much smaller diesels.
So size your diesel for the load you'll really carry most nights. Get that right and it'll still be pulling clean when your next storm rolls in.
Payback Hours on the Fuel Saving
Longer than you'd guess.
At early September 2026 pump prices, the Gentech diesel saves you about 77 cents an hour at 80% load, so its $2,570 premium takes about 3,350 hours of use to pay back. The Hyundai pair does better, saving you about $3.51 an hour at its 75% test load, so roughly 565 hours.
Now count your own hours. Three two-hour blackouts a year is six hours, and at that rate the Gentech diesel never pays for itself. A farm unit doing six hours a day clears 565 hours in about three months.
That's why we'd point most blackout buyers to the cheaper petrol unit, even though the diesel earns us more.
Small Air-Cooled Diesels, Vibration and Service Support
Small diesels are where your trade-offs bite hardest. The ExplorOz member who owned a 2.2kVA Yanmar for ten years called it heavy and noisy, but quality.
Parts and service matter as much as the fuel. Whirlpool members on the Kubota thread said to buy an engine your local agent stocks and services, and warned that cheap eBay generators can leave you chasing parts later. Hyundai's diesels are distributed in Australia by Genelite. Before you buy, ask who services your unit locally, and ring us if you want that checked.
Disadvantages of Petrol Generators
Petrol has its own weak spots, and most show up after your generator has been sitting.
Stale Fuel and Carburettor Problems
Petrol goes off. With about a month of life in a generator tank, the fuel you left in yours after last winter's storm probably won't fire it this winter.
Regular use is the fix. One Whirlpool owner suggests firing it up for ten minutes every few months, and BP says topping up with a third fresh fuel restores what has evaporated. Do that and your generator kicks over first go when the lights go out.
Higher Fuel Burn on Long Runs
Petrol costs you more once the hours stack up. The HY9000LEK's 25-litre tank lasts 9.2 hours at half load, while the smaller DHY6000SE diesel goes 16 hours on its 16-litre tank at half load.
On a two-day outage, that's the difference between one refill trip and several for you. If your generator will be working for days at a time, diesel means fewer trips to the servo in the rain.
Petrol or Diesel Generator for Camping, Home Backup and Farm Work
Here's how it plays out for the jobs you're most likely buying for.
Camping and Caravan Trips
Petrol, almost every time. You want something you can lift and something your campground neighbours can live with, and small diesels lose on both. Look at petrol inverter generators first. If you're only powering a fridge and lights for a weekend, a portable power station could do your job with no fuel at all.
Home Backup During Blackouts
Petrol suits you if you get a few short blackouts a year. Diesel suits you if your outages last for days, or you want it to fire up by itself.
The Hyundai DHY6000SE goes 16 hours at half load on its 16-litre tank, enough to carry your house through the night. The DHY8700SE-LRS adds two-wire auto start, so your transfer switch or solar system can bring it on for you. To size yours, see what size generator do I need.
Standby and Prime Power Ratings
Hyundai states plainly that the DHY8700SE-LRS isn't for prime power. It's a standby unit for when your mains are out, not for week-in, week-out duty. Caterpillar's paper says standby and prime-rated diesel sets are designed to work between 50% and 85% of their nameplate rating. If you plan to power your place around the clock for weeks, ask for a prime-rated unit.
Changeover Switch and Safe Setup
Never plug a generator into a wall socket or your switchboard to power your house. Energy Safe Victoria warns this can back-feed the local network and put utility workers and your neighbours at risk, and says any change to your wiring must be done by a licensed electrician. Three-Phase and Welder Generators
Most three-phase generators are trailer-mounted or bolted to a pad. The Gentech ED6800YSRE-3 gives you a 20A three-phase outlet plus two 15A single-phase outlets in a 100.5kg frame, for $8,600. The Lister-powered ED7000LSRE-3 does the same job at 110kg for $6,490. If you need to weld as well, the ED160WELDYSRE puts out 160 amps at a 60% duty cycle from the same Yanmar engine as the ED6800YSRE-3, for $8,199.
Matching the Fuel Your Ute, Tractor or Mower Uses
Carry one fuel if you can. A rural Whirlpool member keeps his pumps and 3.3kVA generator on four-stroke petrol, the same fuel as the car. The ExplorOz member building a touring truck wanted diesel as the only fuel on board, for the same reason.
