The Owner's Insights on the Hyundai HY9000LEK 8kVA Petrol Generator

5,900W continuous out of a 420cc engine and a 25 litre tank. That's the pair of numbers that matter for you: enough grunt for two trades off one machine, and 9.2 hours at half load so you aren't stopping to refuel mid-job.

It's an open frame machine at 87.9kg on an LRT wheel kit. You'll roll it around your site easily enough, but getting it onto your ute tray is a two-person job.

Both outlets are 15 amp. Worth knowing before it arrives, because a 10 amp plug goes into a 15 amp socket but not the other way around, so your 15A gear plugs straight in.

Why You'll Love the Hyundai HY9000LEK 8kVA Petrol Generator

  • 5,900W continuous, 6,500W surge. Two trades off one machine.
  • 25 litre tank, 9.2 hours at half load. A full working day without refuelling.
  • 420cc Hyundai HY420 engine. The big four-stroke, not a small one straining.
  • Push-button electric start. No pull cord on a cold morning.
  • 2 x 15A 240V outlets. Your 15 amp site gear plugs straight in.
  • 73 dB(A) at 7 metres. Quiet for an open frame machine this size.
  • LRT wheel kit. Roll it where you need it.
  • 87.9kg. Solid, and a two-person lift onto a tray.

Why You Should Consider a Hyundai Petrol Generator

Hyundai build a full range of petrol and diesel generators for the Australian market, and the HY9000LEK is the electric start open frame machine near the top of their petrol line. It carries a 1 year or 100 hour limited warranty. See the rest of the generator range.

What 5,900W actually runs

Size your gear against 5,900W, not the 6,500W surge. On your site that's a compressor and a couple of hand tools, or you and another trade working off one machine without either of you watching the other. On your property it's a pump, a welder on light duty, lights and a fridge. At home on backup it covers your fridge, your freezer, lights, a pump and the hot water. What it isn't is everything at once with the air conditioning running.

Both outlets are 15 amp, and that's on purpose

This is worth sorting before your machine turns up. A 15 amp socket has a bigger earth pin, so a 10 amp plug fits into it, but a 15 amp plug will not fit a 10 amp socket. Two 15A outlets means your site gear, your compressor and a heavy-duty lead all plug straight in. If you plan to run a caravan or ordinary household leads off it, they will fit fine. The other way around is where people get caught.

Nine hours on a 25 litre tank changes how you use it

Twenty-five litres is a big tank for this size of machine, and Hyundai rate it at 9.2 hours at half load. That's your full working day, or a whole night of backup at your house, without you touching it. On a job that matters more than raw output, because a generator you have to top up at lunchtime is one you have to walk back to. Carry a jerry can and you have two days covered.

Is an open frame generator right for you?

An open frame machine gives you more watts per dollar than a silenced or inverter unit, and it's easier for you to service because everything is reachable. What you give up is noise and waveform. At 73 dB(A) it's on the quiet side for its size, but you will hear it, and your power is conventional alternator output rather than the pure sine wave an inverter makes. For tools, pumps, welding and house backup that's exactly what you want. For your laptop or a caravan full of electronics, look at an inverter like the HY6000i.

Backing up your house needs an electrician

If yours is for blackouts, budget for a changeover switch and a licensed electrician to fit it. Running a lead from the generator into a wall socket, which people call backfeeding, energises the street wiring and can kill a linesman working on the line. A changeover switch isolates your house from the grid before your generator connects, so that can't happen. It's a half-day job, and it's the difference between your backup setup being safe and being dangerous. Try the Generator Finder if you're still choosing, or ring the store on 03 7056 6732.

What's Included

  • Hyundai HY9000LEK generator
  • Electric start with battery
  • 2 x 15A 240V outlets
  • LRT wheel kit
  • 1 year or 100 hour limited warranty

What's Not Included

  • Petrol and oil
  • Extension leads
  • A changeover switch and the electrician to fit it
  • A cover, if it is going to live outside

Add fuel, check the oil and it's ready to run. If it's for house backup you also need a licensed electrician and a changeover switch: never backfeed through a wall socket.

Not Sure Which Petrol Generator Suits You?

The HY9000LEK suits you if you want a big-tank open frame machine with electric start, for a site, a farm or house backup where 5,900W and a full day of run time matter more than quiet. It's the wrong pick if you need clean power for electronics, where the HY6000i inverter is the right tool, or if you want a smaller and cheaper machine, where the HY7000LEK steps down. Try the Generator Finder, or call the store on 03 7056 6732.
