The Owner's Insights on the Dometic CFX5 45
The thing that gets people about the CFX5 45 is the lid. It shuts with a proper thunk, not a plasticky click. The handles fold flat against the sides, so it slides into your ute tray without catching on anything.
Forty-five litres is the size most blokes land on. It holds a weekend of food for two. Or your case of beer and the bait, with room spare. It still fits behind the seats in most dual cabs.
The number I'd point you at is 0.76 amp-hours an hour. Dometic measured that at 32 degrees outside, with the box holding 4 inside. Call it 18 amp-hours a day off your battery.
One honest note. This is a single-zone box, so you get a fridge or a freezer, not both at once. If you want frozen meat and cold drinks on the same trip, look at the 75DZ instead.
What Customers Say About the Dometic CFX5 45
Two things come up again and again from owners. The first is how quiet it runs. People report sleeping in the same room without noticing it, and describe a low hum you have to listen for.
The second is how fast it pulls down. Owners talk about a load of drinks going cold while camp is still being set up.
Van and camper owners rate the layout too. Flat lid, controls at the front, power socket at the back. It fits your tight space without a fight.
Why You'll Love the Dometic CFX5 45
- Vacuum insulated panels. Dometic builds vacuum panels into the walls, so the box holds cold longer and pulls less out of your battery.
- Just 0.76Ah an hour at 12V. That is roughly 18 amp-hours a day in 32 degree heat, so your 100Ah battery runs it the best part of five days.
- Freezes to minus 22 degrees. Set it anywhere from plus 20 down to minus 22, so you get a fridge or a proper freezer out of the one box.
- Self-folding aluminium handles. They spring flat against the sides when you let go, and nothing snags when you load your ute.
- Built-in bottle opener. It sits in the handle bracket, so you are never hunting for one at camp.
- Bluetooth and the Dometic app. Check your temperature from the swag, get an alert if you leave the lid open, and watch what it draws.

Why You Should Consider a Dometic Portable Fridge
Dometic has been building mobile refrigeration for decades, and the CFX range is the part of the line-up made for touring rather than fixed installs. What matters most to you here is the back end. Dometic backs the CFX5 with a 5-year Australian warranty, and supports it through a repair network based here. You can see the rest of the range in our Dometic collection.

What Size Power Station Runs the CFX5 45
Your fridge averages 0.76 amp-hours an hour at 12V. That works out near 219 watt-hours a day in 32 degree heat. A 1,000Wh power station will run it about four days before you need a top-up. Add a solar panel and you stop counting days. If you are not sure what size suits your setup, the Power Station Finder asks you a few questions and gives you a straight answer, or browse the portable power station range.
Dometic CFX5 45 vs the CFX2 45
Same 45 litres, different build. The CFX2 45 does the core job well, and you get the same 12/24V and mains power, the same Bluetooth app, and the same 5-year warranty. It also saves you 2kg. The CFX5 45 adds vacuum insulated panels, an anti-condensation coil and a lower draw, at 0.76Ah an hour against 0.86. If you tour off-grid for a week at a time, your CFX5 earns the difference. If your weekends are on a powered site, the CFX2 is plenty.
Fitting the CFX5 45 to a Fridge Slide
There are M6 threaded inserts moulded into the base, so you can bolt it to a fridge slide or your drawer system without drilling the shell. The box measures 694mm deep, 398mm wide and 476mm high. Measure your slide before you order. Leave yourself clearance at the back for the vent and the power socket. If a portable box is not the answer and you want a fridge built into the van, look at the RV fridge range instead.

Not Sure Which Camping Fridge Suits You?
Most blokes land on 45 litres and stay there. Going up to the 55 only helps if you are feeding four or more. The honest limit here is the single zone, so you run it as a fridge or a freezer, never both at once. If you want frozen meat and cold beer on the same trip, step up to the 75DZ. Your order ships from Melbourne, and your CFX5 carries a 5-year Dometic warranty backed by their Australian repair network. Compare the rest of the camping fridge range, or give us a call and you will get a straight answer, not a script.
