The Owner's Insights on the Dometic CFX5 55
The 55 is where a portable fridge starts feeling like a real one. Eighty-five cans, or a family's worth of food for a long weekend without rationing the space.
It is 720mm long and 455mm deep, so check your slide before you commit. This is the point in the range where the box stops fitting places the 45 slid into.
It draws 0.87 amp-hours an hour at 12V with 32 degrees outside and 4 inside. Around 21 amp-hours a day, so a 100Ah battery gets you close to five days.
Honest bit. It is 20.7kg empty. Load it with drinks and ice and you are lifting well over 30kg, which is a two-person job into a high tray.
Why You'll Love the Dometic CFX5 55
- 55 litres and 85 cans. Enough for a family for a long weekend, or a week for two if you shop properly.
- 0.87Ah an hour at 12V. Around 21 amp-hours a day in 32 degree heat, so your 100Ah battery runs it close to five days.
- Vacuum insulated panels. Dometic builds vacuum panels into the walls, so it holds cold longer on less power.
- Freezes to minus 22 degrees. Set it anywhere from plus 20 down to minus 22, so it works as a fridge or a proper freezer.
- Self-folding aluminium handles. They spring flat against the sides when you let go, which matters on a box this size.
- Bluetooth and the Dometic app. Check your temperature from the swag and get an alert if you leave the lid open.

Why You Should Consider a Dometic Portable Fridge
Dometic has been building mobile refrigeration for decades, and the CFX range is the part of the line-up made for touring rather than fixed installs. What matters most to you here is the back end. Dometic backs your CFX5 55 with a 5-year Australian warranty, and supports it through a repair network based here. You can see the rest of the range in our Dometic collection.

What Size Power Station Runs the CFX5 55
Your fridge averages 0.87 amp-hours an hour at 12V, which is about 251 watt-hours a day in 32 degree heat. A 1,000Wh power station runs it roughly four days before you need a top-up. Add a solar panel and you stop counting. If you are not sure what size suits your setup, the Power Station Finder asks you a few questions and gives you a straight answer, or browse the portable power station range.
Dometic CFX5 55 vs the CFX5 45
Nine more litres and eighteen more cans, for 26mm more length, 57mm more depth and 1.8kg more weight. Power draw goes from 0.76 to 0.87 amp-hours an hour, so you lose about half a day off a 100Ah battery. If you are feeding three or more, the 55 is the right call. If it is you and one other, the 45 does the job and fits more places.
Fitting the CFX5 55 to a Fridge Slide
There are M6 threaded inserts moulded into the base, so you can bolt it to a fridge slide or your drawer system without drilling the shell. The box is 720mm long, 455mm deep and 480mm high. That depth is the one that catches people out, so measure your slide before you order and leave clearance at the back for the vent and the power socket. If a portable box is not the answer and you want a fridge built into the van, look at the RV fridge range instead.

Not Sure Which Camping Fridge Suits You?
Feeding three or more? The 55 suits your family or a longer trip, and it is the biggest box in the range that still runs as a single zone. The honest limit is weight and depth. At 20.7kg empty and 455mm deep it needs a proper slide and a second set of hands when it is full. If you want frozen meat and cold drinks at the same time, step up to the 75DZ. Your order ships from Melbourne and your CFX5 carries a 5-year Dometic warranty backed by their Australian repair network. Compare the rest of the camping fridge range, or give us a call and you will get a straight answer, not a script.
