The Owner's Insights on the DRS285 Main Filter

The filter is the part of a dust reduction system that does the actual work. Everything else is a housing to hold it in the right place.

Where you tow decides how fast it loads up. A fortnight of red dirt will do more to a filter than a year of highway running, so there's no useful service interval to quote you.

Pull it out and have a look after every dirt trip. If it's grey and packed solid, it has done its job and it's due.

My advice is simple. Keep a spare in the van. A choked filter on day two of a three-week trip is an annoying thing to be stuck with, and you won't be buying one in Birdsville.

Why You'll Love the DRS285 Main Filter

  • Genuine Dometic part. It's the filter the system was designed around, not a generic pad cut to fit.
  • Changes from inside. Open the ceiling cover, swap it and close it up. Dometic reckons it takes seconds.
  • The cheapest part of the system. It's the smallest line in your dust setup and the one doing the work.
  • Worth carrying a spare. Dust country is exactly where you can't buy a replacement.

Why You Should Consider a Genuine Dometic Filter

A dust reduction system is only as good as what's sitting in it. The genuine filter is sized and rated for the housing, so it seats properly and the air goes through it rather than around it. A cut-down generic pad in the same slot lets dust past the edges, which defeats the point. See the rest of the Dometic range.

When to change the DRS285 filter

So how often? There's no calendar answer, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. It comes down to how much dirt road you cover. Check it every time you come off a dirt trip. Hold it up to the light: if you can't see through it, it's done. A choked filter throttles the airflow through the unit, and that's when the system stops earning its keep. Two minutes of your time and you know where you stand.

How to change the DRS285 filter

Do you need to get on the roof? No. It comes out through the ceiling cover from inside your van. Dometic designed the cover to open and close easily and rates the swap at a matter of seconds. Old one out, new one in, cover closed. Do it at home before a trip rather than in a dusty layby, and keep the old one until you're sure the new one seated properly.

Why the genuine filter matters

The filter has to seal to the housing all the way around. A generic pad trimmed to roughly the right size leaves gaps at the edges, and air takes the easy path every time. That means dust straight past the filter and into your van, which is exactly what you paid to avoid. The genuine part is sized for the slot, so what goes through the unit actually goes through the media.

What's Included

  • 1 x DRS285 main filter

What's Not Included

  • The Dust Reduction System unit itself
  • Installation labour

This is the replacement filter on its own. If you're after the unit it goes in, that's the Dometic Dust Reduction System 2.0.

Not Sure Which Filter Your DRS Takes?

Ring the store with the model number off your unit and we'll confirm it before you order. Dometic doesn't publish this part on their Australian website, so we'd rather check it against them than have you fit the wrong one. If you're running the current Dust Reduction System 2.0, this is the main filter for it. Order two while you're at it. The honest catch with any filter is that it's a consumable, so how long it lasts is down to where you tow and nothing else. Have a look at the Dometic Dust Reduction System 2.0 if you haven't fitted one yet, or browse the rest of our caravan climate gear.
