The Owner's Insights on the Dust Reduction System

Anyone who's towed a van up a corrugated dirt road knows the drill. You pull up at camp, open the door, and there's a film of red dust over everything. Bedding, cupboards, the lot.

The Dust Reduction System 2.0 is Dometic's answer to that. It's a roof unit that sits over a hatch opening you've most likely already got. As you drive, it filters the air moving through your van.

What I rate is what isn't in it. No motor, no wiring, no fuse. Nothing to shake loose on corrugations and nothing drawing off your batteries. It weighs 5.14kg and stands 248mm off the roof.

Be realistic about it though. It cuts the dust right down, it doesn't stop it dead. If your door seals are shot or a hatch is leaking, sort those first or you'll blame the wrong thing.

Why You'll Love the Dust Reduction System

  • No motor and no wiring. Nothing to fuse, nothing to shake loose on corrugations, nothing drawing off your batteries.
  • Fits an opening you already have. It suits roof openings from 290 x 290mm up to 400 x 400mm, so most vans need no new hole cut.
  • Filter swaps from inside. Open the ceiling cover, change the filter, close it up. Seconds, not an afternoon.
  • Developed in Australian dust. Dometic built this one around testing in our own dusty country, not a European lab.
  • Second-generation waterproofing and airflow. Dometic reworked both over the original DRS.
  • Low profile up top. At 248mm tall and 5.14kg, it leaves you roof space for solar.

Why You Should Consider a Dometic Dust Reduction System

Dometic has been fitting out Australian caravans for decades, and the DRS is one of the few things they built for this market specifically. Dometic sells it here and almost nowhere else, which tells you who it was designed around. Parts and service agents are easy to find right across the country. See the rest of the Dometic range.

How the Dometic dust reduction system works

It sits over a roof opening you most likely already have. As you drive, air moves through the unit and through a filter before it gets inside your van. Dometic calls the airflow management patented, and the grille on top keeps stones and debris out of the works. There's no fan and no power feed. The whole thing runs off the air moving past your van as you tow.

What roof opening the Dometic DRS needs

It suits openings from 290 x 290mm up to 400 x 400mm. That covers most standard caravan roof hatches, so on plenty of vans this goes where a hatch already sits. Measure yours before you order. If your opening is smaller than 290mm square it'll need modifying, and that's a job for a caravan repairer rather than a Sunday afternoon. The unit itself takes up 473 x 444mm of roof.

When to change the DRS285 filter

The filter is the consumable here, and how fast it loads up depends entirely on where you tow. A fortnight of red dirt will do more to a filter than a year of highway. Check it whenever you get back off a dirt trip. Changing it means a ceiling cover and a few seconds of your time. Keep a spare in the van so a blocked filter never costs you the back half of a trip.

What a dust reduction system will not do

It won't turn a leaky van into a sealed one. Dust gets in around tired door seals, dodgy hatch gaskets, service hatches and the gap behind a badly fitted vent. Sort those and the DRS does the rest of the work. It also only operates while you're moving, so it does nothing for dust blowing through camp on a windy afternoon. What you should expect is a lot less cleaning when you arrive.

What's Included

  • Dometic Dust Reduction System 2.0 roof unit (DRS2)

What's Not Included

  • Spare DRS285 main filters
  • Installation labour
  • Roof opening modification if yours falls outside 290 x 290mm to 400 x 400mm
  • A hatch adaptor for a non-standard opening

Dometic hasn't published a full box list for this item, so ring the store if you want the exact contents confirmed before you order. Filters are a separate line and worth having on board, so grab a spare DRS285 main filter at the same time.

Not Sure a Dust Reduction System Is Worth It?

Here's the straight answer. If you stick to bitumen and caravan parks, you won't get your money back on this one. It earns its keep on dirt: the Plenty, the Oodnadatta, the Gibb, station tracks, anywhere you spend hours eating the dust off the vehicle in front. The honest catch is that it only does its job while you're rolling, and it reduces dust rather than eliminating it. Your seals still have to do their share. Dometic Australia hasn't published a warranty period for this product type, so ask us and we'll confirm it with them before you buy. Towing into real heat as well?
