The Owner's Insights on the RM 2356
The 2356 is the RM 2350 with a brain in it, and for a lot of people that is worth the difference.
It uses Dometic's patented Universal Energy Selection. You can run it manually like the old one, or set it to automatic and let it pick between gas, 240V and 12V on its own. Pull into a powered site and it sorts itself out.
It fits the same opening as most 0.85 cubic metre fridges but gives you about 10% more room inside. 95 litres gross out of a cabinet 556mm wide and 766mm tall.
The door is reversible and a hinge kit comes in the box, so you can set it to open the way your van layout wants.
Who is it for? Anyone refitting a camper or pop-top who wants the fridge to think for itself. If you would rather flick a knob and save the money, the RM 2350 does the same job.
Why You'll Love the RM 2356
- Patented Universal Energy Selection. Run it manually or set it to automatic and let it choose gas, 240V or 12V for you.
- 95 litres gross. About 10% more room inside than most fridges that share the same cut-out.
- Reversible door with a hinge kit included. Set the door to open the way your van layout wants, straight out of the box.
- Heavy door and wall insulation. It holds temperature longer, which is what you want on a 40 degree day.
- No moving parts. It runs completely silent, and there is nothing to rattle loose on corrugations.
- Easy access internal freezer. Your frozen gear sits behind its own door inside the cabinet.

Why You Should Consider a Dometic Caravan Fridge

On a fridge you will keep for fifteen years, that support matters more than the sticker price. See the rest of the Dometic range.

How a three-way absorption fridge works
There is no compressor in this fridge. A heat source boils an ammonia and water mix, and that vapour moves around a sealed circuit to pull heat out of the cabinet. The heat comes from a gas burner, a 240V element or a 12V element. Nothing moves, so nothing rattles and nothing wears out. That is why these fridges run silently, and why owners hang on to them for so long.
What Universal Energy Selection actually does
Dometic calls it UES, and it is switchable. In manual mode it behaves like the older MES panel and you pick the energy source. In automatic mode it selects for you, so plugging into 240V at a park means you do not have to remember to change anything. LED indicator lights on the panel tell you which source it is using.
Running the RM 2356 on 12V
Dometic rates this fridge at 15 amps on 12V DC, which is about 180 watts. That is a lot to ask of a battery bank overnight, so the 12V setting is meant for use while you are driving on the alternator. Once you park up, put it on gas or on 240V. Get that habit right and your batteries stay where you left them.

Not Sure Which Caravan Fridge Suits You?
If you do not need automatic energy switching, the RM 2350 does the same job for less and fits the same hole. The honest catch is that this is a built-in appliance, not something you drop in yourself. It runs on LPG, so a licensed gas fitter has to install it and certify the gas work, and that cost sits on top of the fridge.
