Why 500W changes how you tour
A 12V cigarette lighter socket gives you about 100W. On a three hour drive that's 300Wh, which barely touches a 1,000Wh station. This gives you 500W, so the same drive puts back around 1,500Wh. The practical difference is that you stop planning the trip around charging: you drive, you arrive, the station is full, and solar becomes a top-up rather than your only option through a cloudy week.
500W or 800W: which one do you need?
It depends on your station and your driving. If you run a RIVER or a smaller DELTA and you do a few hours between camps, 500W refills it comfortably. If you run a big DELTA with 2,000Wh or more, or you only drive an hour between spots, the 800W version gets you there faster. The reverse charging trick
Most alternator chargers push power one way. This one runs in reverse, taking power from your station and putting up to 500W back into your vehicle battery at 13.8V or 27.6V. That's a jump start using the battery you already brought, which is worth knowing about the morning your starter battery is flat somewhere with no phone reception. The gentler 100W maintenance mode keeps a battery topped up rather than reviving it.
What the install involves
It connects to your vehicle battery, not a socket, and it draws up to 45 amps on the 12V side through a 125A fuse. That means a proper cable run and the fuse fitted correctly at the battery end. Plenty of people do it themselves in an afternoon if they're handy under a bonnet. If you're not, it's a short job for an auto electrician and worth paying for. Get the fusing right whichever way you go.
Will it work with your power station?
It's built for the EcoFlow RIVER and DELTA series, and it works with XT60 stations more broadly. If you're running a DELTA 3, a RIVER 3 Plus or similar, it plugs straight in.
