The Owner's Insights on the EcoFlow 800W Alternator Charger

Eight hundred watts off your alternator is roughly eight times what a cigarette lighter socket gives you. In practice that's a kilowatt-hour back into your station every 1.3 hours of driving, so a normal day on the road arrives at camp with the battery full instead of barely touched.

It does three jobs, not one. Charging your station while you drive is the headline. It also works in reverse, feeding 800W back into your vehicle's battery from the station, and it runs a 100W maintenance mode to keep a starter or RV battery healthy on a long trip. That reverse function is what gets people out of trouble when the rig won't turn over.

It wires to your vehicle battery with a 125A fuse, so it's a proper install. The board, the cable puller, a 5 metre input cable and all the fittings are in the box. Plenty of owners do it themselves in an afternoon; if you're not comfortable near your starter battery, get an auto electrician onto it.

Why You'll Love the EcoFlow 800W Alternator Charger

  • 800W while you drive. A kilowatt-hour back into your station every 1.3 hours on the road.
  • Eight times a cigarette lighter. A day's driving actually fills your battery instead of nudging it.
  • Reverse charging at 800W. Feed your vehicle battery from your station when the rig won't start.
  • 100W maintenance mode. Keeps your starter or RV battery healthy on a long haul.
  • GaN construction. It runs cooler and smaller than the old switching designs.
  • Five protections built in. Reverse polarity, overcurrent, short circuit, over and undervoltage.

Why You Should Consider an EcoFlow Alternator Charger

EcoFlow build some of the fastest-charging portable power gear on the market, and this is the accessory that solves the slowest part of touring with a station. It carries a 5-year warranty with support here in Australia. See the rest of the EcoFlow range.

Why 800W changes how you tour

A 12V cigarette lighter socket gives you about 100W. On a three hour drive that's 300Wh, which barely dents a 2,000Wh station. This gives you 800W, so the same drive puts back roughly 2,400Wh. The practical difference is that you stop planning your trip around charging. You drive, you arrive, the station is full, and solar becomes a top-up rather than your only option on a cloudy week.

The reverse charging trick

Most alternator chargers only push power one way. This one runs in reverse, taking power from your station and putting up to 800W back into your vehicle battery at 13.8V or 27.6V. That's a jump start from the battery you're already carrying, which is worth knowing about the morning your starter battery is flat in a spot with no phone reception. It also runs a gentler 100W maintenance mode to keep a battery topped up rather than reviving it.

What you need to install it

It connects to your vehicle battery, not a socket, and it draws up to 76 amps on the 12V side. The kit covers the installation board, a cable puller, a 5 metre input cable, a 1 metre XT150 output cable, the fuse cable and all the screws and nuts. What matters is the cable run and the 125A fuse being fitted properly at the battery end. It's an afternoon's work if you're handy under a bonnet, and a short job for an auto electrician if you're not.

Will it work with your power station?

It's built for the EcoFlow DELTA series, and the Pro models need an adapter. If you run a DELTA 3, DELTA 3 Plus or DELTA 3 Max, it plugs straight in. If you're on a DELTA Pro 3, check the adapter before you order. If your station is another brand entirely, ring the store on 03 7056 6732 and we'll tell you what fits.

Where to mount it

It's 242 x 194 x 35mm and 2.3kg, so it mounts flat on a panel or a bulkhead without taking much room, and the supplied board makes that a tidy job. It works from -20 to 60 degrees, but like anything that moves 800W it wants air around it rather than being buried in a sealed locker. Inside the van or somewhere dry under the bonnet are both fine.

What's Included

  • EcoFlow 800W Alternator Charger
  • Installation board
  • Cable puller
  • Input cable (5m)
  • XT150 output cable (1m)
  • Fuse cable
  • M5, M6 and ST5.5 screws with M6 nuts
  • Manual and warranty card

What's Not Included

  • A power station to charge
  • Adapter for the DELTA Pro models
  • Auto electrician's time, if you'd rather not wire it yourself

The kit is unusually complete: the board, the puller, both cables, the fuse cable and every screw you need. What's not in it is the adapter for the Pro models, so check which station you're running before you order.

Not Sure Which Alternator Charger Suits You?

The 800W Alternator Charger suits you if you tour with an EcoFlow DELTA station and you're sick of arriving with it as flat as when you left. It's the wrong pick if you barely drive between camps, because it only works while the engine is running, in which case solar panels will do more for you. It carries a 5-year EcoFlow warranty. Not sure it suits your station or your vehicle? Call the store on 03 7056 6732 and we'll check it with you before you buy.
