What 6,100 BTU will and won't cool
Six thousand BTU is a small space: a tent, a swag, a truck cab, a boat cabin or a single room. It's not a caravan air conditioner and it won't cool a whole van on a 38 degree afternoon. Where it does work brilliantly is the thing a rooftop unit can't do, which is cooling a space that has no air conditioning at all and no way to fit one. Match it to the volume you're actually trying to cool and it'll do the job.
Why portable beats installed, sometimes
A rooftop unit means cutting your ceiling, 40-odd kilos up high and a fitter's bill. This means picking it up and putting it where you need it. In a tent this week, the boat next week, the shed after that. If you camp in a swag or a tent, or you want cooling in more than one place, there is no installed unit that competes. If you've got one van and it stays a van, an installed unit is more efficient and more permanent.
Running it off-grid
Rated cooling power is 690W on AC and 640W on DC. With EcoFlow's add-on battery you get 2 to 8 hours depending on the setting and the heat. Off a power station, you'll want something that holds 700W comfortably and has the capacity to back it: a 2,000Wh station running it at 640W gives you roughly three hours flat out. Ducting matters more than people expect
Every portable air conditioner has to put the heat somewhere. That means running the exhaust duct out of the space you're cooling, whether that's a tent window, a vent or a cracked door. If the hot air stays in the room, you're heating it as fast as you're cooling it. Set the duct up properly the first time and this works. Skip it and you'll wonder why it isn't doing much.
Heating as well as cooling
It does 2,000W of heating, which is more than it cools, and that makes it genuinely useful in winter as well. A tent at 5am in the high country is exactly where a 2,000W heater earns its keep. It runs down to 5 degrees ambient, so alpine mornings are within range. That two-season use is what makes it worth carrying rather than a summer-only piece of kit.
