The Owner's Insights on the Hyundai HY6500SEi Petrol Inverter Generator

Four ways to start it, and that's the feature that sells this one. Remote key fob, electric button, two-wire auto, and a recoil cord as the last resort. The auto start means an off-grid solar setup can call for power without you being there.

It's an inverter, so the output is a clean sine wave and the engine throttles back when your load is light. That's why it sits at 65 dB at 7 metres, which is quiet enough for a caravan park, and why your laptop and chargers are safe on it.

The 18.5 litre tank and the 32A socket are what lift it above a camping generator. You can draw real power through a plug, and at 89kg with wheels and a handle, one person can still move it around.

Why You'll Love the Hyundai HY6500SEi Petrol Inverter Generator

  • 6,500W output. Power tools, a fridge and the rest, together.
  • Pure sine wave inverter. Safe for laptops, chargers and control boards.
  • Four start modes. Remote, electric, auto and recoil as backup.
  • Two-wire auto start. Your solar system starts it without you there.
  • 65 dB at 7 metres. Quiet enough for a caravan park.
  • 1 x 32A and 2 x 15A sockets. Real power through a plug, no adapters.
  • 18.5 litre tank. Longer between fills than most this size.
  • 89kg with wheels and a handle. One person can still shift it.

Why You Should Consider a Hyundai Inverter Generator

Hyundai's generator range is distributed in Australia by Genelite, and the HY6500SEi is their mid-size inverter with remote and auto start. It carries a 1-year factory warranty. See the rest of the generator range.

Four start modes, and when you'd use each

Remote start is the one you'll use most: a key fob from the caravan or the back door, so you never stand out in the rain. Electric start is the button on the panel. Recoil is the pull cord, there for the day the battery is flat. The one that matters if you're off-grid is auto start: a two-wire contact closure fires it up, so your inverter or battery management system can run it when the sun hasn't delivered. Most generators give you one or two of these. Four is unusual.

What the 32 amp socket changes for you

Two 15A sockets caps you at 30 amps no matter what the generator can make. This one adds a 32A socket, so a single heavy load can take a proper share of the output through a plug rather than needing a sparky. If you're feeding a caravan on 32A, running a site board, or driving one big tool, that's the socket you'll use. It does need a matching lead, which most people don't already own.

Why 65 dB is worth paying for

Sixty-five decibels at 7 metres is quiet for a generator of this size, and it's the number that decides whether you're welcome at a caravan park. An open frame unit of similar output sits closer to 75 to 80 dB, and every 10 dB is roughly twice as loud to your ear. The inverter is what makes the difference: it lets the engine throttle back when your load is light instead of holding 3,000 rpm all day.

Where does 6,500W run out?

Six and a half kilowatts covers a fridge, lights, a kettle, chargers and a couple of power tools, or a caravan running air conditioning with room to spare. Where it stops is a welder alongside everything else, or two big induction loads at once. Add up what runs at the same time, use the running figure for each item rather than the startup figure, and leave a margin. If you're near the line, the HY8000i steps up to 7,000W rated.

One year of warranty is the trade here

Worth knowing up front: the factory warranty on this one is 12 months, where some open frame generators at similar money carry two or three years on the engine. What you're buying instead is the inverter output, the noise level and the four start modes, which no open frame unit at this price gives you. If a long engine warranty matters more to you than quiet clean power, say so when you ring the store on 03 7056 6732 and we'll point you at the right machine.

What's Included

  • Hyundai HY6500SEi inverter generator
  • 2 remote start keys and 2 ignition keys
  • 12V DC charging cable
  • Spark plug spanner, oil filler jug and screwdriver
  • Engine oil, 10W40 grade
  • User manual
  • 1-year manufacturer warranty

What's Not Included

  • Petrol
  • Extension leads and a 32A lead
  • The wiring between your solar system and the auto start contact
  • A cover, if it's going to live outside

The oil, the tools and both sets of keys come in the box, so it's ready to run once you add fuel. The 32A socket needs a matching lead, and if you want the auto start doing its job, whoever installed your solar or battery system needs to wire the contact.

Not Sure Which Inverter Generator Suits You?

The HY6500SEi suits you if you want clean quiet power for a caravan, a camp or a remote job, and you'd like the generator to start itself when your solar falls short. It's the wrong pick if you run a welder or heavy induction loads, where the HY8000i gives you more headroom, or if your loads are light, where the HY4000SEi costs less and weighs less. It carries a 1-year factory warranty. Try the Generator Finder, or call the store on 03 7056 6732.
