The Owner's Insights on the Thule Omnistor 5200 Electric 12V Awning

The important number on this one is 12. It runs off your van's 12V system, not 230V, which means it works on a free camp with nothing plugged in. That's the practical difference between this and the bigger 230V awnings.

There's a manual override too, so a flat battery or a dead motor doesn't leave your awning stuck out in the weather. That's the sort of thing you never think about until the night you need it.

You get 2.5 metres of projection in lengths from 3 to 5 metres, in a black or white cassette. One sizing point before you order: the size is the cassette length, and the fabric is 180mm shorter. Measure the flat run on your van against the cassette, not the fabric.

Why You'll Love the Thule Omnistor 5200 Electric 12V Awning

  • 12V motor. Runs off your van's battery, so it works on a free camp with no mains.
  • Manual override. A flat battery doesn't leave your awning stuck open.
  • 2.5 metre projection. Enough shade for a table and chairs, in any of the five lengths.
  • Black or white cassette. Match it to your van instead of settling for what's in stock.
  • Vertical lowering legs. The support legs drop safely without scraping down your van's side.
  • Quick Lock leg adjustment. Set the angle once and clamp it, no fiddling.

Why 12V matters more than the wattage

A 230V awning needs a powered site, a generator or an inverter to move. A 12V awning runs off the battery that's already in your van. On a caravan park that difference is nothing. On a free camp, a station stop or a spot with no power at all, it's everything: you pull up, press the button, and the awning goes out. If most of your nights are unpowered, this is the version to buy.

Measuring for the right size

This is the mistake people make, so read it first. The size on the awning is the length of the cassette, the box that bolts to your van. The fabric is 180mm shorter than that, so a 4.0m awning gives you 3.82m of shade. Measure the flat, unobstructed run on the side of your van, allowing for doors, windows and vents, then match that to the cassette length. Call the store on 03 7056 6732 if you're between sizes.

The 5200 or the 9200: which one?

They're different tools. The 5200 runs on 12V with 2.5m of projection, in lengths to 5 metres, and it weighs 23 to 38kg. The 9200 runs on 230V with 3m of projection, in lengths to 6 metres, and it's heavier. Buy the 5200 if you camp unpowered or your van is on the smaller side. Buy the 9200 if you're always on power and you want the biggest shaded area available.

What the manual override is for

Every motorised awning has the same failure mode: the motor stops with the fabric out and the weather turning. The 5200 has a manual override built in, so you wind it in by hand and deal with the motor later. On a 12V system that also covers the more common scenario of a house battery that's run flat, which happens to everyone eventually.

What's Included

  • Thule Omnistor 5200 awning in your chosen length and cassette colour
  • 12V motor with manual override
  • Support legs with Quick Lock adjustment
  • Installation instructions

What's Not Included

  • Professional installation and mounting brackets for your vehicle
  • Thule LED lighting or accessory rail
  • Wiring from your van's 12V system to the awning

Mounting brackets are vehicle-specific and are ordered separately, so talk to your installer about what your van needs. The 12V feed also has to be run and fused properly, which is part of the install rather than a job for afterwards.

Not Sure Which Caravan Awning Suits You?

The Omnistor 5200 suits you if you camp off power, want push-button operation, and 2.5 metres of projection covers your setup. It's the wrong pick if you want the biggest shaded area going and you're always on mains, where the 9200 with 3m of projection is the better buy. Not sure which length fits your van, or how it should be mounted? Call the store on 03 7056 6732, or send an SMS to 0476 330 590 and we'll measure it up with you before you order.
