The Owner's Insights on the Thule Omnistor 5200 Manual Awning

This is the wind-out version of the 5200. No motor, no wiring, no flat battery to worry about. You put the handle in and wind it out, and it takes about as long as it does to get the chairs out of the boot.

It's also the one you can change your mind about. Thule build the manual 5200 so a motor can be retrofitted later, so if you decide you want push-button in a couple of years, you're not buying a whole new awning.

One sizing point before you order, because this is where people trip up. The size is the length of the cassette, and the fabric is 180mm shorter. Projection changes with length too: the 1.9m gives you 1.4m out, the 2.3m gives you 1.8m, and everything from 3.0m up gives you the full 2.5m.

Why You'll Love the Thule Omnistor 5200 Manual Awning

  • Manual wind-out. No motor and no wiring, so nothing to go flat on you.
  • Retrofit a motor later. Change your mind in two years without changing the awning.
  • Up to 2.5m of projection. Room for your table, your chairs and the dog.
  • Seven sizes, black or white. Match your van instead of settling for what's in stock.
  • Vertical lowering legs. The legs drop without scraping down your van's side.
  • Quick Lock leg adjustment. Set your angle once and clamp it, no fiddling.
  • Drainage in the front profile. Water runs off instead of pooling above your head.
  • Made in Belgium. Thule's own factory, not a rebadged import.

Why You Should Consider a Thule Caravan Awning

Thule have been building awnings and vehicle gear in Europe for decades, and the Omnistor line is what most quality caravans and motorhomes are fitted with. This one's made in Belgium. See the rest of the Thule range.

Measuring for the right size

This is the mistake people make, so read it first. The size on the awning is the length of the cassette, the box that bolts to your van. The fabric is 180mm shorter than that, so a 4.0m awning gives you 3.82m of shade. Measure the flat, unobstructed run on the side of your van, allowing for doors, windows and vents, then match that to the cassette length. Call the store on 03 7056 6732 if you're between sizes.

Projection is not the same on every size

Worth knowing before you order the small one. The 1.9m cassette only projects 1.4m, and the 2.3m projects 1.8m. You need to be at 3.0m or longer to get the full 2.5m of shade coming off the van. If your priority is depth rather than length, the shortest sizes will disappoint you, and the jump from 2.3m to 3.0m is where the awning starts to feel like an outdoor room.

Manual or electric: which one to buy

The manual costs less, has nothing to go wrong electrically, and works on any van whether you have 12V run to the side or not. The electric version saves you thirty seconds and lets you put it away from inside. Where the manual really wins is that you can retrofit a motor to it later, so it isn't a decision you're locked into. If you already know you want push-button, look at the 12V electric 5200 instead.

What the tension arms do

Anything longer than 4.02m gets integrated tension arms as standard. Their job is keeping the fabric taut across a long span so it doesn't sag, flap or hold water in the middle. On the shorter sizes the spring arms handle that on their own. If you're buying a 4.5m or 5.0m, that's the feature keeping it quiet on a breezy afternoon.

Fitting it to your vehicle

Thule awnings need a vehicle-specific adapter, which is ordered separately based on what you drive. That's not an upsell, it's how the mount is engineered: the bracket has to match your van's wall profile. Get an installer who knows Thule to do it, because a wall-mounted awning at 30kg is not a job to improvise. Ring the store on 03 7056 6732 and we'll tell you what your van needs.

What's Included

  • Thule Omnistor 5200 manual awning in your chosen size and cassette colour
  • Support legs with Quick Lock adjustment
  • Winding handle
  • Installation instructions

What's Not Included

  • Vehicle-specific mounting adapter
  • Professional installation
  • The retrofit motor kit
  • Thule tent rail, LED strip or side panels

Mounting brackets are vehicle-specific and are ordered separately, so talk to your installer about what your van needs. If you think you'll want the motor eventually, it's worth mentioning at install time so the wiring is already there.

Not Sure Which Caravan Awning Suits You?

The manual 5200 suits you if you want a proper Thule awning without the wiring, and you don't mind spending half a minute winding it out. It's the wrong pick if you want the biggest shaded area going, where the longer Omnistor 8000 covers more ground. Not sure which length fits your van, or how it should be mounted? Call the store on 03 7056 6732, or send an SMS to 0476 330 590 and we'll measure it up with you before you order.
