The Owner's Insights on the Thule Omnistor 8000 Awning Electric 230V

Push a button and it rolls out. That's the pitch, and after a few trips of winding a manual awning out in the heat you'll understand why people pay for it. The 230V motor comes with a remote.

It's a wall mounted awning from 4.0m to 6.0m long with a 2.75m projection, which is a serious amount of shade. Thule's integrated tension rafter deploys itself as the spring arms open, so the fabric goes tight without you touching it.

Double steel cables run through the spring arms, and there's a drainage system built in so rain doesn't pool. White cassette, and three fabric colours.

Why You'll Love the Thule Omnistor 8000 Awning Electric 230V

  • 230V motor with remote. Out and in at the push of a button.
  • 4.0m to 6.0m lengths. Sized to your van, not near enough.
  • 2.75m projection. Real shade, not a strip of it.
  • Integrated tension rafter. Deploys itself, fabric goes tight.
  • Double steel cables in the arms. It holds its shape in a breeze.
  • Built-in drainage. Rain runs off instead of pooling.
  • Three fabric colours. Mystic Grey, Alaska Grey or Sapphire Blue.
  • Flat brackets included. Special brackets available if needed.

Measure the cassette, not the fabric

This is the mistake that costs people money, so read it before you pick a size. The length you order is the overall length of the cassette, and the fabric inside is 180mm shorter than that. So a 5.0m awning gives you 4.82m of actual shade, and the cassette needs 5.0m of clear wall to mount on. Measure the run on your van between anything that sticks out, then order to that. Ring the store on 03 7056 6732 with your measurement if you'd rather we sized it with you.

What the motor is really worth

A manual awning is one crank handle and about ninety seconds, which sounds like nothing until you're doing it in 38 degree heat, or you're on your own, or it's the fourth stop of the day. The 230V motor and remote turn it into a button press. The other benefit people don't expect is that it comes in as easily as it goes out, so you actually roll it away when the weather turns instead of leaving it out and hoping.

The tension rafter that deploys itself

On most awnings, a tension rafter is an extra part you fit by hand every time, which means half the time it doesn't get fitted. Thule build it into the 8000, and the spring arms deploy it automatically as the awning rolls out. That keeps the fabric tight from the moment it's open, which stops the sag that pools water and stops the flapping that wears out seams. Combined with the double steel cables through the arms, it's why this awning holds its shape.

Do you camp on power, or off it?

This is the mains-powered version, so it runs off 240V site power rather than your battery. That suits vans that are usually on powered sites and motorhomes with an inverter. If you free camp more than you plug in, that's worth thinking about before you buy, because a flat site with no power means winding it out another way. Ring the store on 03 7056 6732 and tell us how you camp and we'll tell you honestly whether the electric is the right call.

Look after the fabric and it lasts a decade

Three habits. Roll it away wet as rarely as you can, and if you have to, open it again at home to dry rather than leaving it rolled. Clean it once or twice a year with a proper PVC cleaner instead of detergent, which strips the coating. And roll it away when the wind gets up rather than testing it, because no awning is a storm shelter, however well it's built. Do those three and the fabric outlasts the van.

Not Sure Which Caravan Awning Suits You?

The Omnistor 8000 Electric suits you if you want the biggest wall mounted awning Thule make, opening at the push of a button, and you usually camp on powered sites. It's the wrong pick if you free camp without 240V, where a manual 8000 does the same job with a handle, or if your van wall is shorter than 4 metres. Call the store on 03 7056 6732 with your measurement, or send an SMS to 0476 330 590.
