The Owner's Insights on the Thule Omnistor 8000 Manual Awning

This is the big one. 2.75 metres of projection in lengths from 4.5 to 6.0 metres, which is a proper outdoor room rather than a strip of shade beside the door. If you've got a long caravan and you want the whole side covered, this is the Omnistor to look at.

It winds out by hand, and Thule's ultra-rapid gear means that's less work than the length suggests. There's a brake built into it too, so it doesn't creep open on you while you're driving or while it's stowed.

The bit that matters on an awning this size is the tension rafter and the reinforced spring arms with double steel cables. Six metres of fabric wants to sag and flap. That's what stops it. Same sizing rule as the rest of the range: the size is the cassette, the fabric is 180mm shorter.

Why You'll Love the Thule Omnistor 8000 Manual Awning

  • 2.75m of projection. The deepest shade Thule make, whichever length you pick.
  • 4.5m to 6.0m long. Covers the full side of your van, not just the door.
  • Integrated tension rafter. Your fabric stays taut across six metres instead of sagging.
  • Double steel cable spring arms. Reinforced for the span, so yours holds on a blustery day.
  • Ultra-rapid gear with a brake. Winds out fast and won't creep open while you're driving.
  • Mystic Grey fabric. Tough enough for your Aussie summers and easy to hose down.
  • Integrated drainage. Rain runs away instead of pooling above your head.
  • Flat mounting brackets standard. Straight onto most caravans, with specials if yours needs them.

Why You Should Consider a Thule Caravan Awning

Thule have been building awnings and vehicle gear in Europe for decades, and the Omnistor line is what most quality caravans and motorhomes are fitted with. The 8000 is their economical big-span model. See the rest of the Thule range.

Measuring for the right size

This is the mistake people make, so read it first. The size on the awning is the length of the cassette, the box that bolts to your van. The fabric is 180mm shorter than that, so a 5.0m awning gives you 4.82m of shade. Measure the flat, unobstructed run on the side of your van, allowing for doors, windows and vents, then match that to the cassette length. Call the store on 03 7056 6732 if you're between sizes.

Why 2.75m of projection changes things

Most awnings give you 2.5m or less. The extra 250mm sounds minor until you put your table and four chairs under it. At 2.5m the chairs on the outside edge catch the afternoon sun. At 2.75m they don't. Across a five metre span that's a genuinely different amount of usable ground, and it's the main reason you'd choose the 8000 over the shorter Omnistors.

What holds six metres of fabric flat

At this length your awning has two enemies: sag in the middle and flap at the edges. Thule handle both. The integrated tension rafter pushes down on the fabric to keep it under load, and the spring arms are reinforced with double steel cables so they don't give under the extra span. That's why yours stays quiet in a breeze while a cheap long awning drums over your head all afternoon.

The brake and the ultra-rapid gear

Winding six metres of awning out by hand would leave you sweating without the right gearing, so Thule fitted their ultra-rapid gear to make it quick. Just as useful is the built-in brake, which stops your awning opening on its own. On a long roll that's not a nicety: an awning that unwinds itself while you're on the highway is an expensive afternoon.

Mounting it to your van

It comes with standard flat mounting brackets, which suit most caravans straight up. If your wall is profiled or you're fitting it to something less common, special brackets are available to suit. Either way, this is a heavy, long awning and yours wants a proper install. Ring the store on 03 7056 6732 or send an SMS to 0476 330 590 and we'll work out what your van needs before you order.

Not Sure Which Caravan Awning Suits You?

The Omnistor 8000 suits you if you've got a long van and you want the deepest shade Thule make, with nothing electrical to fail. It's the wrong pick if your van is under about four and a half metres of clear wall, where the Omnistor 5200 fits properly and costs less. Not sure which length fits your van, or how it should be mounted? Call the store on 03 7056 6732, or send an SMS to 0476 330 590 and we'll measure it up with you before you order.
