What a sagging awning actually costs you
A loose awning does three things you don't want on your trip. It pools water in the middle, which is how a night of rain turns into your awning collapsed and an arm bent by morning. It flaps, which wears your fabric at the seams and keeps you awake. And it looks like you couldn't be bothered. A tension rafter fixes all three at once by pushing down through the centre of your fabric, so the whole sheet pulls tight across your awning rather than hanging off the ends.
Why tension is what actually holds up in wind
Wind damage to your awning almost never starts with the wind being too strong. It starts with loose fabric catching air, lifting, snapping back and putting a shock load through your arms. A tensioned sheet has nothing to catch, so it sits and takes the pressure instead of moving. That's why a rafter buys you real confidence in a breeze. It's still not a storm anchor: if the weather turns properly nasty, roll your awning away, because no accessory changes that.
Is this the right rafter for your awning?
Two things have to match, and getting either wrong means it won't fit. First, the mount type: this is the roof version, for awnings mounted on the roof of your van. The wall version is a different part. Second, the projection, which is how far your awning extends out, not how wide it is. This one is 2.0 metres. Anodised aluminium, and why it matters on the coast
Anodising builds a hard oxide layer into the surface of the aluminium rather than painting over it, so it doesn't chip off and start corroding underneath where you can't see it. On a rafter that lives outside, gets salt spray on it and spends its life rolled up against your damp fabric, that's the difference between a part that looks the same in five years and one that pits and stains. The plastic end caps take your knocks so the alloy doesn't.
Fitting it, and the one habit worth having
Open your awning fully, sit the rafter into the channel at both ends, then roll the fabric up a touch until it locks under tension. That's the whole job. The habit worth having is taking the rafter out before you roll your awning away, because leaving it in puts a hard bar inside a tight roll and marks your fabric. It stores flat along the case or under a bunk, so there's no reason not to.
