The Owner's Insights on the Truma Aventa Comfort Reverse Cycle Roof Top Air Conditioner

The Aventa Comfort is the roof unit for people who don't want to give up a locker. It drops into an existing skylight opening, which is the cheapest install you'll get, and the interior panel is only 46mm deep so you barely lose headroom.

It's reverse cycle, 2,400W of cooling and 1,700W of heating out of the same unit, and it's rated for vans up to 7.5 metres. That's a longer van than most under-bunk units will handle.

The feature that matters at a caravan park is the soft start. It ramps the compressor up instead of slamming it on, so it plays nicely with a 10 amp site supply and it's far easier on a generator. At 33kg you'll want a hand getting it onto the roof, and then it stays there.

Why You'll Love the Truma Aventa Comfort Reverse Cycle Roof Top Air Conditioner

  • 2,400W cooling, 1,700W heating. One unit gets your van through summer and winter.
  • Soft start function. It won't trip a 10 amp caravan park supply or bully your generator.
  • Fits an existing skylight. The cheapest install path on a van that already has an opening.
  • 46mm interior panel. You lose almost no headroom to the ceiling unit.
  • Suits vans up to 7.5m. It covers longer vans than most under-bunk units manage.
  • Remote or CP Plus control. Set it from the remote, or from the panel if your van has one.

Why soft start matters at a caravan park

A standard air conditioner throws its compressor straight into action, and that inrush is what trips a 10 amp site post or overwhelms a small generator. Soft start ramps it up over a couple of seconds instead. In practice it means you can run your air conditioner on a site supply that's shared with other vans, and a mid-sized generator handles it without a fight. It's the single most useful feature on this unit.

Roof unit or under bunk?

A roof unit like this goes in an existing skylight opening, which is far and away the simplest install, and it doesn't cost you a single locker. The trade-offs are height, wind drag, and 33kg sitting on top of the van. An under-bunk unit like the Truma Saphir keeps the weight low and the roof clear for solar, but you give up storage and the install is more involved. If your roof is already crowded with panels, go under the bunk.

Will it suit your van?

Truma rate it for vans up to 7.5 metres, which covers most Australian tourers. The unit is 660 x 1,008mm on the roof and needs a standard skylight opening, so measure yours before you order. The interior panel is only 46mm deep, so it barely intrudes on headroom. If your van is longer than 7.5 metres you'll be underdone on a 40 degree day and you want a bigger unit.

Can you run it off a generator?

Yes, and the soft start is why. It draws 4.2 amps cooling and 3.7 heating on 240V, which is about 1kW of running load. A 2kW inverter generator is undersized once you count the compressor startup even with soft start; a 3.5kW or larger inverter generator runs it comfortably alongside your fridge. Ring the store on 03 7056 6732 with your generator model and we'll tell you straight.

Getting it installed

A skylight-fit roof unit is the easiest air conditioner install there is, but it's still cutting, sealing and a 240V connection on your roof. A bad seal is a leak you find in the next downpour. Unless you've done it before, get a caravan technician to fit it. Ring the store and we'll point you at someone near you.

What's Included

  • Truma Aventa Comfort roof top air conditioner
  • Interior distribution panel
  • Remote control

What's Not Included

  • Professional installation and roof sealing
  • CP Plus control panel, if you'd rather not use the remote
  • A 240V power source: powered site, generator or power station

Installation material is over and above the 33kg unit weight, so budget for it with your installer. What you still need is a 240V supply, whether that's a powered site, a caravan generator or a power station.

Not Sure Which Rooftop Air Conditioner Suits You?

The Aventa Comfort suits you if your van has a skylight opening to use, your roof isn't full of solar, and you'd rather keep every locker you have. It's the wrong pick if the roof is spoken for or you don't want the extra height, where the Truma Saphir goes under a bunk instead. Not sure it will fit your van, or whether your power setup will run it? Call the store on 03 7056 6732 and we'll work through it with you before you order.
