The Owner's Insights on the Welling & Crossley WC-P13750RCD 13.75kVA Open Frame AVR Generator

The RCD is the reason to buy this version. Residual current protection is built into the outlet panel, which is what a site wants and what a lot of generators make you add afterwards with a separate box. On this one it's already there.

Output is 10,000W rated and 11,000W max off a 688cc twin-cylinder engine, with a 45 litre tank that gives 27 hours at quarter load. That's an overnight run with plenty spare, or a long day working hard with one fill.

Two things to be straight about. It's loud, under 90 dBA at 7 metres, so it belongs on a site or a rural property rather than a caravan park. And it's 160kg dry, so plan how it gets off the truck.

What does the RCD actually buy you?

A residual current device cuts your power in a fraction of a second if current starts leaking to earth, which is what happens when your lead is damaged or your tool gets wet. On most job sites your portable power has to be RCD protected, and if the generator doesn't have it you're adding a portable RCD box and remembering to test it. Here it's built into the outlet panel. The non-RCD WC-P13750 is nearly the same price, so unless you already own a portable RCD, this is the version to take.

Is under 90 dBA too loud for where you are?

Let's be straight, because the spec sheet is. Under 90 dBA at 7 metres is loud, and you will know it. It's an open frame twin at 3,000 rpm and it sounds like it. On your site, your farm or an industrial yard nobody will care. Near houses or at a caravan park you'll have a conversation you don't want. If quiet matters more than output, a silenced or inverter generator is the right tool, and the trade is you pay more per watt.

Four ways to start it, including auto

Recoil is your last resort. Electric is the button on the panel. Wireless remote saves you walking out in the rain. The one worth knowing about is the two-wire auto start: a contact closure fires it up, so your inverter, battery system or transfer switch runs it without you being there. That turns a site generator into backup for your house or your shed, which most units this size can't do.

27 hours at quarter load, and what that means working

It burns 2.2 litres an hour at quarter load, so your 45 litres gives 27 hours. That figure is genuinely useful for overnight backup or a light day. Working it hard is different: fuel use tracks the load, so at full output expect to fill it well before your day is out. Plan for one refuel on a heavy day and you'll be about right.

Where 160 kilos is going to live

It has a heavy-duty wheel kit so you can move it around your yard or site, but it's 160kg dry and 920mm tall, and it isn't going in the back of your ute without a hoist or two strong blokes and a ramp. Work out how it comes off the truck before it arrives. Ring the store on 03 7056 6732 and we'll go through delivery with you, or try the Generator Finder if you're still sizing it.

What's Included

  • Welling & Crossley WC-P13750RCD generator
  • Built-in RCD protection
  • 2 x IP66 15A and 1 x IP66 32A outlets
  • USB-A and USB-C charging ports
  • Wireless remote start
  • Heavy-duty wheel kit
  • User manual
  • 2-year manufacturer warranty

What's Not Included

  • Petrol
  • Extension leads and a 32A lead
  • The wiring between your system and the two-wire auto start
  • A changeover switch and the electrician to fit it
  • A cover, if it's going to live outside

The RCD, the wheel kit and the remote all come as standard. The 32A outlet needs a matching lead, and if you're backing up a building you need a licensed electrician and a changeover switch: never backfeed through a wall socket.

Not Sure Which Petrol Generator Suits You?

The WC-P13750RCD suits you if you need serious single-phase power on a site or a rural property, you want RCD protection built in, and noise isn't a problem where it runs. It's the wrong pick if you're near neighbours or at a caravan park, where the WC-P9000Si silent inverter is far quieter, or if you already own a portable RCD, where the non-RCD WC-P13750 saves you a little. It carries a 2-year limited warranty. Try the Generator Finder, or call the store on 03 7056 6732.
