The Owner's Insights on the Westinghouse WHXC8500E 8.5kVA Portable Generator

Six thousand seven hundred and fifty watts running, off a 420cc Westinghouse OHV engine, with a 25 litre tank behind it. That's a house on backup, a shed full of tools, or a site running a couple of trades.

The tank is the part that separates it from most portables this size: 13.1 hours at half load. A blackout that starts in the evening is covered through your night without anyone going out with a jerry can.

You get electric push-button start with the battery included, a VFT meter showing voltage, frequency and run hours, and a steel roll frame with wheels and fold-down handles.

Why You'll Love the Westinghouse WHXC8500E 8.5kVA Portable Generator

  • 6,750W running, 8,500W starting. Your house, your shed or a full set of tools.
  • 25 litre tank, 13.1 hours at 50%. An overnight outage without a refuel.
  • 420cc Westinghouse OHV engine. A big engine that isn't straining at load.
  • Electric push-button start. Battery included, no pull cord.
  • VFT meter on the panel. Voltage, frequency and hours, so you track servicing.
  • 2 x 240V outlets and a 12V DC. Household gear and a battery charger.
  • Steel roll frame with wheels. Fold-down handles, roll it into position.
  • 2-year domestic warranty. Backed by Westinghouse Australia.

Running watts and starting watts: use the smaller one

6,750W is what it holds for you continuously. 8,500W is the surge, and that only covers the moment your pump, compressor or air conditioner kicks in. Size your gear against 6,750 and leave yourself a margin on top. On a house that's the fridge, lights, pumps, hot water and a few tools comfortably. What it isn't is a whole house with air conditioning and an oven going at once.

Why the 25 litre tank is the real feature

Plenty of portable generators this size run a 15 or 18 litre tank, which has you refuelling in the middle of the night during an outage, or halfway through a site day. Your twenty-five litres, at 13.1 hours of half load, covers your full night, or a working day with moderate draw. On a backup generator that's worth more than another kilowatt of output, because the whole point is that it keeps going while you're doing something else.

The VFT meter earns its place

Your panel shows voltage, frequency and accumulated run hours. Voltage and frequency tell you at a glance whether the generator is happy under the load you've put on it. Run hours are the useful one long term: engines are serviced on hours, not months, and without a meter you are guessing. Cheap generators leave it off.

Is 80 dB going to be a problem where you put it?

Westinghouse quote 80 dB(A) at full output, and that's loud. It's an open frame generator and you'll hear it. On your rural property, your farm or a site nobody will care. Beside a house in a suburb, or at a caravan park, it's a different conversation. If quiet matters to you, an inverter generator or a silenced diesel is the right tool, and you pay more per watt for it.

Which WHXC8500E should you buy?

There are three versions of this machine on the site, and one of them is your answer. This standard WHXC8500E gives you the output and the push-button start. The WHXC8500E Pro adds an RCD safety switch approved to Australian WH&S requirements plus weatherproof outlets, which is what a job site will want. The AS II version adds a two-wire automatic start and stop, so your solar system or a transfer switch runs it without you. If you'll be standing there to start it, this one is the sensible buy. Not sure? Ring the store on 03 7056 6732.

What's Included

  • Westinghouse WHXC8500E generator
  • Starting battery
  • 2 x 240V AC and 1 x 12V DC outlets
  • VFT meter on the control panel
  • Steel roll frame with wheels and fold-down handles
  • 2-year domestic warranty

What's Not Included

  • Petrol
  • Extension leads
  • A changeover switch and the electrician to fit it
  • A cover, if it is going to live outside

The starting battery is included, so it's ready to run once you add fuel and check the oil. If you're backing up a house you also need a licensed electrician and a changeover switch: never backfeed through a wall socket.

Not Sure Which Petrol Generator Suits You?

The WHXC8500E suits you if you want serious backup for a house, a shed or a farm, with a tank that gets you through a night, and you're there to start it. It's the wrong pick if you need RCD protection for a site, where the Pro version has it fitted, or if you need it to start itself, where the AS II version is the only one that does, or if it has to run near bedrooms, where 80 dB(A) will be a problem. It carries a 2-year domestic warranty. Try the Generator Finder, or call the store on 03 7056 6732.
