The Owner's Insights on the Westinghouse WHXC8500E Pro 8.5kVA Portable Generator

The Pro difference is the safety switch. This version has an RCD, approved to Australian WH&S requirements, and weatherproof outlets. On a site that's the first thing your supervisor will ask about.

Underneath it's the same machine as the rest of the WHXC8500E family: 6,750W running, 8,500W on surge, a 420cc Westinghouse OHV engine and a 25 litre tank good for 13.1 hours at half load.

You get push-button electric start with the battery included, a VFT meter tracking voltage, frequency and run hours, and Never-Flat wheels with fold-down handles.

Why You'll Love the Westinghouse WHXC8500E Pro 8.5kVA Portable Generator

  • RCD safety switch fitted. Australian WH&S approved, no separate box.
  • Weatherproof outlets. 240V AC and 12V DC, sealed against the rain.
  • 6,750W running, 8,500W starting. Your house, your shed or a full set of tools.
  • 25 litre tank, 13.1 hours at 50%. An overnight outage without a refuel.
  • 420cc Westinghouse OHV engine. A big engine that isn't straining at load.
  • Electric push-button start. Battery included, no pull cord.
  • VFT meter on the panel. Voltage, frequency and hours, so you track servicing.
  • Never-Flat wheels and fold-down handles. Roll it into position and forget about tyres.

What the RCD actually buys you

A residual current device cuts your power in a fraction of a second if current starts leaking to earth, which is what happens when your lead is damaged or your tool gets wet. On most job sites your portable power has to be RCD protected. Without it fitted you're carrying a separate portable RCD box and remembering to test it. Here it's built in for you and approved to Australian WH&S requirements, which is the difference between turning up ready to work and turning up with a problem.

Weatherproof outlets matter more than they sound

Your 240V and 12V outlets on this version are weatherproof. On a generator that lives outside, under your ute canopy or beside your shed, that's what stops water and dust getting into the sockets over a few seasons. It's a small spec that shows up years later as the difference between a panel that still works for you and one that's corroded.

Running watts and starting watts: use the smaller one

6,750W is what it holds for you continuously. 8,500W is the surge, and that only covers the moment your pump, compressor or air conditioner kicks in. Size your gear against 6,750 and leave yourself a margin on top. On a house that's the fridge, lights, pumps, hot water and a few tools comfortably. What it isn't is a whole house with air conditioning and an oven going at once.

Why the 25 litre tank is worth as much as the output

Plenty of portable generators this size run a 15 or 18 litre tank, which has you refuelling in the middle of the night during an outage, or halfway through a site day. Your twenty-five litres, at 13.1 hours of half load, covers your full night or a working day with moderate draw. On a backup or site generator that matters more than another kilowatt, because the whole point is that it keeps going while you do something else.

Which WHXC8500E should you buy?

There are three versions of this machine on the site, and one of them is yours. This Pro has the RCD and weatherproof outlets. The standard WHXC8500E is the same output without them. The AS II adds two-wire automatic start and stop, so a solar system or transfer switch can run it without you. For site work the Pro is the one to take. For an off-grid house that starts itself, take the AS II. Ring the store on 03 7056 6732 if you want us to sort it with you.

What's Included

  • Westinghouse WHXC8500E Pro generator
  • RCD safety switch, Australian WH&S approved
  • Weatherproof 240V AC and 12V DC outlets
  • Starting battery
  • VFT meter on the control panel
  • Never-Flat wheels and fold-down handles
  • 2-year domestic warranty

What's Not Included

  • Petrol
  • Extension leads
  • A changeover switch and the electrician to fit it
  • A cover, if it is going to live outside

The RCD and the starting battery are both fitted, so it's site-ready once you add fuel and check the oil. If you're backing up a house you still need a licensed electrician and a changeover switch: never backfeed through a wall socket.

Not Sure Which Petrol Generator Suits You?

The WHXC8500E Pro suits you if you need serious output on a site where RCD protection is required, or anywhere the generator lives outdoors and the outlets cop weather. It's the wrong pick if you need it to start itself, where the AS II version is the only one that does, or if it has to run near bedrooms, where an open frame at this size will be a problem. It carries a 2-year domestic warranty. Try the Generator Finder, or call the store on 03 7056 6732.
