Which Generator Lasts the Longest?

The generator that lasts the longest is usually a well-serviced diesel on an industrial engine, then a petrol set on a name-brand engine like Honda's GX. Few makers publish an hours figure, so here's what to judge it on.

How long a generator lasts comes down mostly to the engine, and how hard that engine works for each hour it runs.

Diesel vs Petrol Generators

Thompson Power, an Australian generator hire company, gives rough figures of 1,000 to 2,000 hours for petrol generators and 15,000 to 50,000 hours for diesel. It puts the diesel edge down to high-torque, low-RPM engines with tough internals.

Portable Diesels at 3,000 rpm

Here's the catch for a portable. The diesels on our shelves don't run slow. The Gentech ED6800YSRE on a Yanmar L100N5, the Gentech ED7000LSRE on a Lister Petter LPDR188 and the Gentech ED8500KSRE on a Kohler KD425 are all listed at 3,000 rpm, the same speed as a petrol set making 50Hz power.

What you're buying in those is an industrial diesel engine that mechanics know and can get parts for. That matters more over 20 years than the fuel on its own.

Inverter Generators and Eco Throttle

Inverter generators don't have to hold 3,000 rpm. The Westinghouse iGen2250 has an ECO throttle, and our listing for the Briggs & Stratton P2500 says PowerSmart throttles the engine back to match what you're drawing, for less fuel, less noise and less wear on light loads. None of the manuals we checked put a figure on how much longer that makes an engine last.

Build Quality and Parts Support

Two generators with the same output can have very different engines inside, and that's where the years go.

Honda GX Engines vs Clone Engines

As our listing for the Genelite GH4000 puts it, a lot of generators this size run Honda-pattern clone engines that look the same until a part's needed. The GH4000 uses a genuine Honda GX270, which is supported through the Honda dealer network across Australia.

Build detail matters inside a brand too. An owner from Redlands, Queensland on the Caravaners Forum had two 1kVA Hondas with alloy bores, and carbon scoring that wasn't covered under warranty. They moved to a 2kVA with a steel bore and still have a working generator.

Service Schedules in the Manual

None of the manuals we checked print a lifespan, but they all print a service schedule, and following it is what gets a generator to old age. Honda's GX engine manual has the first oil change at one month or 20 hours, then every six months or 100 hours.

Queensland's Electrical Safety Office suggests you ask the supplier for the expected usage before engine overhaul, in years, because a long period before overhaul may involve considerable extra cost. How often to change it is in how often generators need oil.

Warranty Length on Stocked Brands

Warranty is the one durability number a maker puts money behind. These terms come from our product pages and, for Westinghouse's hours limit, its warranty document, checked 14 September 2026.

What a Warranty Tells You

The fine print is worth a read. The Westinghouse generator warranty drops to one year for commercial use and counts any buyer with an ABN as commercial, and the manual says stale fuel faults aren't covered at all.

So a long warranty tells you the maker expects the engine to hold up. It won't save a generator that's been left with old fuel in it.

What Owners Report

Owners are more upbeat than the fine print. On an ExploroZ thread about Honda EU20i longevity, a Victorian member said theirs was over three years old and they couldn't fault it. A Queensland member reckoned one used 40 hours a year would still be going in 20 years, if you change the oil and keep the air filter clean.

That's a forecast, not a record, but it matches the pattern: quality engine, low hours, regular oil.
