Why 20 PSI is the number to look for
Most cheap electric pumps top out around 1 or 2 PSI, which is fine for an airbed and useless for anything with drop-stitch construction. A paddle board wants 12 to 15 PSI. An inflatable dock usually wants less, but it wants it accurately. Twenty PSI covers all of it with headroom, which is why this handles gear that a pool-toy pump simply can't.
What the two modes are actually for
Low pressure moves a lot of air but not much pressure, so it fills the volume of a big inflatable quickly. High pressure moves less air but pushes hard, which is what firms the thing up at the end. The pump switches between them, so you get speed first and accuracy second rather than choosing one. On a big dock that's the difference between five minutes and twenty.
Set it and walk away
Dial in the pressure you want and the auto shut-off stops the pump when it gets there. That matters more than convenience: over-inflating a drop-stitch board on a hot day is how seams get stressed, and under-inflating is why it feels soft underfoot. Setting the number takes the guesswork out, and you can be doing something else while it runs.
