The Owner's Insights on the FJZ7 Lite

Roof space is the thing nobody thinks about until they go to add solar. Then you find the air con has eaten the middle of your roof.

That's the argument for the Lite. It takes up 752 x 702mm of your roof, where the Pro and the Plus both want 1090 x 700mm. That's the best part of a third of a metre back for panels.

It's the lightest of the three as well, at 30.6kg. It's also the only one in the range where Dometic publishes the roof opening it needs, which is 400 x 400mm, and a roof thickness between 25 and 60mm.

3,000W of cooling is plenty for your smaller van or pop-top. If you tow a big twenty-two footer through Queensland in February, step up.

One difference worth knowing. Dometic lists the Lite's roof unit as RS485 only, where the Plus and Pro list WiFi and Bluetooth on the unit itself. The app connectivity comes through the ADB.

Why You'll Love the FJZ7 Lite

  • Small footprint up top. 752 x 702mm leaves you a lot more roof for solar panels than the bigger units.
  • Lightest in the range. 30.6kg is nearly 8kg off the Plus, which matters when your roof load is tight.
  • Published roof opening. Dometic lists a 400 x 400mm cut-out and a 25 to 60mm roof thickness, so you can check before you buy.
  • Variable-speed inverter compressor. It holds your temperature steadily instead of cycling hard through the night.
  • Adaptive Power Mode. Set a current ceiling in the Dometic Power App and the unit stays underneath it.
  • Integrated heating. The same unit warms your van, so a cold morning doesn't need a second appliance.

Why You Should Consider a Dometic Caravan Air Conditioner

Dometic has been putting rooftop air conditioners on Australian caravans for decades, and the service network is the practical reason to put one on your van. Dealers, parts and service agents sit right across the country. On a unit bolted through your roof, that support is worth more than a small price gap. See the rest of the Dometic range.

What roof opening the FJZ7 Lite needs

Dometic lists a 400 x 400mm cut-out for the Lite, with a roof thickness between 25 and 60mm. That's the standard opening your van may already have, either from an existing air conditioner or a roof hatch. Measure yours and check the thickness before you order. If your van is outside that range, talk to a caravan repairer first. Dometic doesn't publish the same figures for the Pro and the Plus, so check their installation manuals separately.

What installing a Dometic caravan air conditioner involves

The unit sits over the roof opening and the ADB clamps up from inside the ceiling. Where your van already carries a Dometic rooftop unit, the swap is usually straightforward. Where there's no opening, someone has to cut one and seal it, and that seal is what keeps water out of your van for the next ten years. Use a caravan repairer or a licensed electrician. True Gear sells the gear, not the install. Ring the store and we'll point you at a dealer.

How much roof space the FJZ7 Lite gives back

The Lite covers 752 x 702mm of your roof. The Pro and Plus both cover 1090 x 700mm. That's about 338mm of length handed back to you, running the full width of the unit. On your roof, already carrying panels, a hatch and an antenna, that gap is often the difference between fitting another panel and not. It's also 30.6kg instead of 36kg or 38kg, which helps if your roof load rating is tight.

Running the FJZ7 Lite off batteries and solar

Dometic hasn't published a maximum current figure for the Lite, so we won't guess one here. What we can say is that it's the smallest unit in the range at 3,000W, so it asks less of your system than the Pro or the Plus. Adaptive Power Mode lets you set a current ceiling in the Dometic Power App and the unit trims output to stay under it. Ring the store before you size an inverter around it and we'll get the figure confirmed with Dometic.

What's Included

  • FreshJet FJZ7 Lite roof-top unit
  • Manuals

What's Not Included

  • FreshJet FJZ ADB air distribution box
  • Remote control (supplied with the ADB)
  • Installation labour
  • Roof opening cutting and sealing

Dometic supplies the Lite as the roof unit and its manuals. You need the ADB as well, so add the FreshJet FJZ Electronic ADB to your order or ring the store and we'll sort the pair.

Not Sure Which Caravan Air Conditioner Suits You?

Buy the Lite for the footprint, not for the price. If roof space or roof load is your constraint, this is the one in the range that gives you room back. If you tow a long van through real inland heat, the FJZ7 Pro at 3,400W is the better fit and it's not much dearer. The honest catch is the same on all of them. A rooftop air conditioner means an opening cut through your roof and sealed properly, so it's a job for a qualified caravan repairer or licensed electrician. True Gear sells the gear and doesn't install it. Dometic Australia covers air conditioners for three years against faulty materials and workmanship, and your rights under Australian Consumer Law sit alongside that. Towing on dirt as well?
