Why under bunk instead of on the roof
A rooftop unit means cutting a hole in your ceiling, adding 250mm or so of height, and carrying 40-odd kilos up top where it affects how the van tows. This one lives in the storage space under your bunk. No hole in the roof, no extra height under a carport or a low branch, and the weight sits low in the van where it belongs. What you give up is the storage space it occupies, so decide which you'd rather have.
Measure the space before you order
It's 734mm long, 398mm wide and 296mm high, and that's the hole it needs. Under-bunk storage varies enormously between vans, so get a tape measure in there before you buy rather than after. You also need to allow for the ducting to the three vents and a return air path, which an installer will work out with you. Ring the store on 03 7056 6732 if you want to talk it through first.
What reverse cycle actually gives you
It's the same refrigeration circuit running backwards. In cooling it pulls 2,200W of heat out of your van. In heating it puts 2,200W back in, and there's a 500W PTC element on top of that for when it's genuinely cold outside. It's rated to work down to -7 degrees. Below that a diesel heater is the better tool, but for the mornings most Australian travellers actually see, this covers it.
What it draws, and what that means off-grid
820W cooling and 1,260W heating on 240V, which is 3.8 to 5.5 amps. On a powered site that's nothing. Off-grid through an inverter it's a genuine load: running it for a few hours needs a decent battery bank and a station that can hold 1,260W continuously. Add up your setup before you count on it, or look at the power station range if you're building that side of it.
Getting it installed
The one-piece EPP frame makes the physical fit simpler than most, but this is still a 240V appliance being built into a vehicle with ducting and a return air path.
