The Owner's Insights on the Gentech EP8000HSR 8kVA
Eight kVA off a Honda GX390 is the step up from a 7kVA when you're running a bigger compressor or a welder on site. The alternator is actually rated at 9.5 kVA, so it isn't working flat out to give you 8, and that headroom is what keeps your voltage steady when a big load drops on.
Pick your start type. The recoil model is 80kg and you pull it over. The electric start model is 85kg and turns over with a key, which is what you want with gloves on or a crook back. Same engine, same output, same footprint.
Two things to plan for. The tank is 6.1 litres, which is about two hours and twenty minutes at 80% load, so you'll top it up during a working day. And at 74 dBA it's a proper work generator, not something to run beside a caravan awning.
Why You'll Love the Gentech EP8000HSR 8kVA
- Honda GX390 engine. The commercial engine every mechanic knows, so parts and service are easy.
- 8 kVA off a 9.5 kVA alternator. It isn't straining to make its rated output, so your voltage holds under load.
- Double 15A GPO. Both your heavy leads plug straight in without an adaptor or a power board.
- Recoil or electric start. Pull it over, or press a button when you're wearing gloves.
- Compact 810 x 545 x 545mm frame. It fits in the ute tray and it fits in the shed.
- Pre-delivery tested. It's run and checked before it ships, so it starts the day it lands.

Why You Should Consider a Gentech Generator

What will an 8kVA generator run?
Eight kVA on single phase is about 6.4kW of real work, which covers a site compressor, a small welder and your lighting at the same time, or a farm shed with a pump and a few tools. Both 15A outlets are live at once. If you're powering a house with the air conditioning going you want to look higher up the range, and if you only need a caravan and a fridge, this is far more generator than you'll ever use.
What the 9.5 kVA alternator rating means for you
The engine and alternator are rated above the 8 kVA the generator is sold at. That headroom matters when something with a motor starts up, because a compressor or a pump pulls several times its running load for a second or two. A generator running at the very top of its alternator's capacity sags in that moment and your tools notice. This one has room to give.
Recoil or electric start: which one to buy
Same Honda engine, same 8 kVA, same frame. The recoil model is 80kg and starts with a pull cord. The EP8000HSRE is 85kg, starts with a key, and still has the recoil as a backup. If it lives in the shed and gets used once a week, save the money. If you're starting it repeatedly through the day, or you're already loading it in and out of a ute, the key start earns its keep.
How long will it run on a tank?
The 6.1 litre tank gives you 2.36 hours at 80% load, off Gentech's own figure of 2.58 litres an hour. Run it lighter and you'll get more. Keep a jerry can on the truck, because this is a generator you top up through the day rather than fill once in the morning. Let it cool before you refuel it.
What's Included
- Gentech EP8000HSR or EP8000HSRE generator
- User manual
- 2-year manufacturer warranty
What's Not Included
- Fuel
- Wheels and handles kit
- Extension leads and 15A plugs
- Changeover switch or house wiring
It ships as the generator itself. At 80kg it's worth adding the wheels and handles kit if you'll be moving it around. If you're wiring it into a house or a shed, get a licensed electrician to fit a changeover switch: never backfeed through a wall socket.
Not Sure Which Generator Suits You?
The EP8000HSR suits you if a 7kVA isn't quite enough for your compressor or your welder, and you want a Honda engine with headroom in the alternator. It's the wrong pick for camping or a caravan, where 74 dBA and 80kg make no sense and an inverter generator is the answer. If you're between sizes, the 7kVA EP7000HSR is quieter and lighter for less money. It carries a 2-year Gentech warranty with service support here in Australia. Not sure what size you need?
