Why the Y shape, and who it's for
The fork in a Y pontoon is sized so a bow rider noses straight in and sits there held on both sides. You step off your bow onto the deck, which is exactly where the walk-through on a bow rider puts you. If your boat has a different layout, or you're docking a jetski, the shape works against you. AquaDeck make a U pontoon that wraps a bigger hull, a straight pontoon for side-on mooring, and a jetski dock. Match the shape to your boat first, then pick your size.
The sand problem is the one you'll notice most
If you beach your boat you know the routine: everyone wades in, everyone brings half the shoreline aboard, and you spend the drive home thinking about the vacuum. With the pontoon between your boat and the water, people get out onto the deck, rinse their feet and step in clean. Your carpet lasts longer, your bilge stays clear and your boat is a nicer place to be. It sounds minor until you have done it both ways for a season.
Which size do you actually need?
Work from how many people you carry, not how big your boat is. Small at 3.5m x 3m holds 480kg and four people, which suits your family and a runabout. Medium at 5.5m x 3m holds 720kg and six, and that's the one most people land on because it gives you room to leave gear on the deck. Large at 8m x 5m holds 960kg and eight, and it's a serious piece of kit at 43.5kg packed. Bigger also means more for you to inflate, more to store and more to handle on your own.
What drop-stitch actually means underfoot
Drop-stitch is thousands of threads joining the top and bottom skins, so when it's pumped up the deck stays flat instead of ballooning. That's why you can walk across yours and it feels like a floor, not a lilo. The 1000D PVC at 0.9mm is the outer skin, and it's the part that shrugs off your hull nudging in and a dropped anchor. Pump it to between 1.5 and 2.0 PSI: under that it's soft, over that you're stressing seams for nothing.
Looking after it in salt water
Two habits and yours will outlast the warranty by years. Rinse the salt off before it goes in the bag, because salt crystals grind at the fabric and the seams every time it's rolled and unrolled. And let a little air out if it's sitting inflated in full sun on a 40 degree day, because the air inside expands and the pressure climbs well past 2 PSI. Store yours dry, out of the sun, and it stays good.
