The Owner's Insights on the FreshJet FJZ Electronic ADB

This is the part people get caught out by. Buy a Dometic rooftop air conditioner and you've bought the roof unit only. The ADB is the other half, and you can't run one without it.

ADB stands for air distribution box. It's the panel that sits flush in your ceiling underneath the roof unit. It takes the cold air off the roof and pushes it into your van, front and back.

It's also where everything you actually touch lives. The temperature and fan controls sit on a flush touch display. There's a remote in the box. The dust filter comes out for cleaning, and the outlet vents point where you want them.

The dimmable warm-white LEDs are a nice touch. They turn the panel into your ceiling light instead of a plastic box you look at.

Installed height is 48mm. That matters in a van where headroom is measured in fingers.

Why You'll Love the FreshJet FJZ Electronic ADB

  • Runs the whole system. Temperature, fan speed and mode from a flush touch display, plus a remote in the box.
  • Two-way airflow. It moves your cold air front and back through adjustable vents you can aim by hand.
  • Only 48mm deep. It takes almost nothing off your headroom, which matters in a low van.
  • Dimmable warm-white LEDs. The panel doubles as your ceiling light instead of just sitting there.
  • CleanAir purifier and a reusable filter. The dust filter pulls out, gets a clean and goes back in.
  • Backwards compatible. Dometic lists it as fitting all their digital roof air conditioners across the FJZ and FJX series.

Why You Should Consider a Dometic Air Distribution Box

Dometic splits its rooftop air conditioners into a roof unit and an ADB so you can match the controls to the vehicle. Buying the genuine one means the wiring, the mount and the app all line up first go. It also keeps your warranty conversation simple if something goes wrong. See the rest of the Dometic range.

What an ADB actually does

ADB is short for air distribution box. So what does it actually do? The rooftop unit does the cooling. The ADB is the ceiling panel that takes that air and spreads it through your van, front and back, through vents you can aim. It also carries your controls, your display, the filter and the lights. So the roof unit is the engine and this is the dashboard and the ducting. Dometic sells them separately, which is why a rooftop air conditioner alone won't run.

Which Dometic air conditioners the FJZ ADB fits

Dometic lists this ADB as backwards compatible with all their digital roof air conditioners across the FJZ and FJX series. That covers the current FJZ7 range and the FJX generation before it. If your existing unit is older than that, or it's a mechanical unit with a dial rather than a display, check with us before you order. Give the store a call with the model number off the roof unit and we'll confirm it against Dometic's list.

How the FJZ ADB is controlled

There are two ways in. A flush touch display on the panel sets temperature, fan speed and mode, and Dometic supplies a remote control in the box. On top of that the ADB carries Bluetooth and WiFi, which is what connects the system to the Dometic Power App. That app link is how Adaptive Power Mode gets its current ceiling on the FJZ7 units. Worth knowing if you plan to run your air con off batteries.

Keeping the FJZ ADB filter clean

How often should you clean it? The dust filter pulls out of the panel from below. Dometic makes it reusable, so you clean it and put it back rather than buying a new one. Do it more often than feels necessary if you tow on dirt. A loaded filter chokes the airflow, and choked airflow is usually why a unit that cooled fine last summer feels gutless this one. It takes a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Pair it with the roof unit that suits your van: the FJZ7 Plus at 4,000W, the FJZ7 Pro at 3,400W, or the FJZ7 Lite at 3,000W. Ring the store if you want the pair matched and sent together.

Not Sure Which Air Distribution Box You Need?

If you're buying a new FJZ7 rooftop unit, this is the one that goes with it. If you're replacing a tired ADB under an older Dometic unit, check your model first, because Dometic lists this one as fitting their digital roof air conditioners across the FJZ and FJX series. Anything older or mechanical is a different conversation, so ring the store with your model number. The honest catch is the fitting. This clamps up through your ceiling and wires into the roof unit, so it's work for a caravan repairer or licensed electrician rather than a weekend job. Dometic Australia covers air conditioners for three years against faulty materials and workmanship, and your rights under Australian Consumer Law sit alongside that.
