What installing a Dometic caravan air conditioner involves
This isn't a bolt-on job. The unit sits over an opening cut through your roof, and the ADB clamps up from inside the ceiling. If your van already runs a Dometic rooftop unit, your existing opening may suit it. If it doesn't, someone has to cut one and seal it properly. Get that wrong and you've got a leak over your bed. Use a caravan repairer or a licensed electrician. Ring the store and you'll get pointed at a dealer near you.
Running the FJZ7 Pro off batteries and solar
Can you run it off your own power? With the right system behind it, yes. The Pro draws up to 6.1 amps at 240V flat out, so call it around 1.5kW through an inverter. That wants a decent lithium bank and real solar on your roof, not a token panel. Adaptive Power Mode is the part that makes it manageable. You set a current ceiling in the app and the unit trims output to stay under it. Less current, less cooling. That's the trade.
Reverse-cycle heating on the FJZ7 Pro
The Pro heats as well as cools, off one button on the ADB. For a cold start in the high country it beats you getting up to light a diesel heater. It won't match one in serious cold though, because a heat pump gives up output as the outside air drops away. Dometic lists an operating range of minus two to 52 degrees. If your winters are genuinely cold, treat this as a bonus rather than your main heating.
FJZ7 Pro versus the Plus and the Lite
All three share the platform, so your choice comes down to size and roof space. The Lite is 3,000W, 30.6kg, on a 752 x 702mm footprint. The Pro is 3,400W and 36kg. The Plus is 4,000W and 38kg. The Pro and the Plus share the same 1090 x 700mm footprint, so stepping between those two costs you nothing off your roof. Going down to the Lite buys you back a lot of room for panels.
