The Owner's Insights on the FJZ7 Plus

I've had this one in front of me and the first thing you notice is how flat it sits. It's 283mm tall on the roof, and the shell is shaped to cut wind noise on the highway.

4,000W of cooling is the headline. It's Dometic's first 4.0kW rooftop caravan unit, and it's aimed at big vans that cop real heat. If your van is under about five metres, you probably don't need this much.

The bit I rate most is Adaptive Power Mode. You set a current cap in the Dometic Power App and the unit stays under it. On a low-amp site hookup, that's the difference between running your air con and tripping the breaker.

One thing to be straight about. This is the roof unit only. You need the ADB as well, and you need a qualified installer to cut and seal the roof.

Why You'll Love the FJZ7 Plus

  • 4,000W of cooling. Dometic's first 4.0kW rooftop caravan unit, built for big vans in real Australian heat.
  • Adaptive Power Mode. Set a current cap in the Dometic Power App and your air con holds under it.
  • Variable-speed inverter compressor. It holds the temperature instead of cycling hard on and off all night.
  • Brushless fan motors and a sleep mode. Dometic tuned this generation around quiet nights, not just cold air.
  • Reverse-cycle heating built in. One button warms your van on a cold morning, so you skip a second heater.
  • R32 refrigerant and recycled plastics. Lower global warming potential than the gas Dometic used before.

Why You Should Consider a Dometic Caravan Air Conditioner

Dometic has been building rooftop air conditioners for caravans for decades, and their service network here is the real reason to buy one. Parts, dealers and service agents are everywhere in Australia. On a unit bolted through your roof, that support matters more than the sticker price. See the rest of the Dometic range.

What installing a Dometic caravan air conditioner involves

A rooftop unit is not a bolt-on job. It sits over an opening in your roof, and the ADB clamps up from inside the ceiling. If your van already runs a Dometic rooftop unit, your existing opening may suit. If it doesn't, someone has to cut one and seal it properly. Get that wrong and you have a leak over your bed. Use a caravan repairer or a licensed electrician. True Gear sells the gear, not the install. Ring the store and you'll get pointed at a dealer near you.

Running the FJZ7 Plus off batteries and solar

Can you run it off your batteries? With the right setup, yes. The unit draws up to 6.78 amps at 240V when it's working hard, so that's roughly 1.6kW through an inverter. You want a solid lithium bank and plenty of solar behind it. Adaptive Power Mode is what makes it workable off-grid. You cap the current in the Dometic Power App, the unit trims its output to stay under, and your bank lasts longer. It's a trade though. Less current means less cooling.

Reverse-cycle heating on the FJZ7 Plus

The FJZ7 Plus is reverse cycle, so the same unit heats. Heating runs off one button on the ADB. On a cool morning in the high country that saves you firing up a diesel heater for an hour. It won't replace one in genuine cold, because a heat pump loses output as the outside air drops. Dometic lists an operating range of minus two to 52 degrees. If you chase snow country in winter, keep the diesel heater.

FJZ7 Plus, Pro or Lite: which one fits your van

Three units on one platform. The Lite gives you 3,000W at 30.6kg, on a 752 x 702mm footprint that leaves roof space for solar. The Pro steps up to 3,400W at 36kg. The Plus is 4,000W at 38kg, across 1090 x 700mm. Bigger van, hotter country, more bodies inside: go up. A small van you tow south over summer: the Lite is plenty. Roof load matters as well, so check what your van is rated to carry.

What's Included

  • FreshJet FJZ7 Plus roof-top unit
  • Installation manual
  • Operating manual

What's Not Included

  • FreshJet FJZ ADB air distribution box
  • Remote control (supplied with the ADB)
  • Installation labour
  • Roof opening cutting and sealing

The roof unit and the ADB are two separate items, and you need both. Add the FreshJet FJZ Electronic ADB to your order, or call us and we will pair them for you.

Not Sure Which Caravan Air Conditioner Suits You?

If your van is under about five metres, the FJZ7 Pro at 3,400W will do the job and save you a couple of hundred dollars. Tight on roof space for solar? The FJZ7 Lite has a much smaller footprint. The honest catch on all of them is the install. A rooftop air conditioner means cutting an opening in your roof, and that is a job for a qualified installer. True Gear does not install. Dometic Australia covers air conditioners for three years against faulty materials and workmanship, and your rights under Australian Consumer Law sit alongside that.
