The Owner's Insights on the FJZ4 Essential

Not everyone needs an inverter air conditioner. If your van spends its life on powered sites, a fixed-speed unit does the same job for a good deal less money.

That's what the FJZ4 Essential is. It's the entry point into the FreshJet range at 2.2kW of cooling and 1kW of heating, and Dometic pitches it at vans up to about five metres.

Fixed speed means the compressor is either on or off. You lose the smooth temperature holding you get from the FJZ7 units, and you lose the ability to cap current draw from an app.

What you keep is the important bit. It still cools, it still heats, it still runs on 240V, and it still carries Dometic's Australian service network behind it.

Same caveat as every rooftop unit. You need the ADB underneath it, and you need a qualified installer to cut and seal your roof.

Why You'll Love the FJZ4 Essential

  • 2.2kW of cooling. Sized for smaller vans and camper conversions rather than a big twin-axle tourer.
  • 1kW of reverse-cycle heating. Takes the edge off a cold morning without you carrying a separate heater.
  • Suits two roof openings. It fits a 360 x 360mm or a 400 x 400mm cut-out, so most vans are covered.
  • Four fan speeds. Enough range to run it quietly overnight or flat out on a hot afternoon.
  • R32 refrigerant. The same lower global warming potential gas Dometic uses across the FJZ range.
  • Entry price into the FreshJet range. You get Dometic build and Dometic service without paying for inverter control.

Why You Should Consider a Dometic Caravan Air Conditioner

Dometic has been fitting rooftop air conditioners to Australian caravans for decades, and the service network is the real reason to put one on your van. Dealers, spare parts and service agents are spread right across the country. On a unit bolted through your roof, that support is worth more than a small saving. See the rest of the Dometic range.

Fixed speed or inverter: what you give up

So what does fixed speed cost you? The FJZ7 units use a variable-speed inverter compressor. It slows down once your van is cool and holds the temperature there. The Essential runs fixed speed, so the compressor is either on or off. In practice that means a bigger swing in cabin temperature, more noise when it kicks in, and a harder start on your supply. If you sleep light, that difference is the one you will notice. If you run it on a powered site during the day, it barely matters.

What roof opening the FJZ4 Essential needs

It suits a 360 x 360mm or a 400 x 400mm cut-out and a roof thickness between 25mm and 60mm, with adaptors available up to 120mm. That covers most Australian vans, including where an old unit is coming off. Measure your opening and your roof thickness before you order. These figures come from Australian retailer listings rather than Dometic's own website, so have your installer confirm them against the installation manual before any cutting starts.

What installing a Dometic caravan air conditioner involves

The unit sits over an opening in your roof and the ADB clamps up from inside the ceiling. Where a rooftop unit already sits, the swap is usually straightforward. Where there is no opening, someone has to cut one and seal it, and that seal is what keeps water out of your van for the next decade. Use a caravan repairer or a licensed electrician. True Gear sells the gear, not the install. Ring the store and we will point you at a dealer.

How much air the FJZ4 Essential moves

How much air does it actually shift? Dometic rates it at 428 cubic metres an hour across four fan speeds, with a temperature set range of 16 to 31 degrees. For a van up to about five metres, that is enough to pull the cabin down on a hot afternoon and hold it. Push it into a longer van with more glass and you will feel it working harder than it should. That is the point where the extra spend on a 3kW unit starts paying you back.

What's Included

  • FreshJet FJZ4 Essential roof-top unit

What's Not Included

  • Air distribution box (ADB)
  • Installation labour
  • Roof opening cutting and sealing
  • Roof thickness adaptors if your roof is over 60mm

Australian sellers list this unit both on its own and bundled with an ADB, so check what you are comparing. Ring the store and we will confirm exactly what ships in your box before you order. The FreshJet FJZ Electronic ADB is the matching distribution box.

Not Sure Which Caravan Air Conditioner Suits You?

Buy the Essential if your van is small, your budget matters and you mostly plug into power. Its honest limitation is the fixed-speed compressor. It cycles on and off rather than holding a steady temperature, it is noisier at full noise than the inverter units, and there is no Adaptive Power Mode to cap your current draw. If you camp off-grid or you want the quiet, step up to the FJZ7 Lite at 3kW or the FJZ7 Pro at 3.4kW. The other catch applies to every rooftop unit: it means an opening cut through your caravan roof and sealed properly, which is work for a qualified caravan repairer or a licensed electrician. True Gear sells the gear and does not install it. Dometic Australia covers air conditioners for three years against faulty materials and workmanship, and your rights under Australian Consumer Law sit alongside that.
