The Owner's Insights on the Gentech EP5900HSR 5.9kVA Honda Powered Generator

Five point nine kVA off a Honda Australia approved GX340, recoil start, 70kg. Gentech pitch it at the builder and the tradie running small power tools, and that is exactly what it is: no battery, nothing to go flat, just a cord and an engine that starts.

At 68 dBA at 7 metres it is one of the quieter open frame units around, which matters if you work near houses or on a job where your crew has to talk over it.

One thing to plan around: the tank is 6.1 litres and that is 2.6 hours at 80% load. This is a machine for a service call or a morning of work, not for setting up and walking away. Carry a jerry can.

Why You'll Love the Gentech EP5900HSR 5.9kVA Honda Powered Generator

  • 5.9kVA power and alternator rating. A compressor, lighting and hand tools together.
  • Honda Australia approved GX340. The engine every small engine mechanic knows.
  • Recoil start. No battery to go flat between jobs.
  • 68 dBA at 7 metres. Quiet for an open frame generator this size.
  • 2 x 15A outlets. Standard Australian sockets, nothing to work around.
  • 2.35 litres an hour at 80%. Real numbers to budget your fuel against.
  • 735 x 545 x 545mm. A compact footprint for 5.9kVA.
  • Only 70kg. Five kilos lighter than the electric start version.

Why You Should Consider a Gentech Petrol Generator

Gentech build petrol and diesel generators for the Australian trade and rural market, and the EP5900HSR is their compact 5.9kVA recoil-start machine on a Honda GX340.

Be realistic about the 6.1 litre tank

This is the spec that decides whether the machine suits you, so here it is plainly. At 80% load it burns 2.35 litres an hour, and your tank holds 6.1 litres. That's 2.6 hours. Run it lighter and you'll get longer, but you're never getting a working day out of one fill. What you get instead is a compact 70kg machine that lives on your tray. Carry a 20 litre jerry can and it's a non-issue. Expect all-day unattended running and it will annoy you.

Recoil start: is it the sensible buy here?

There's no battery, which means nothing to go flat over a wet fortnight, nothing to replace in three years, and 5kg less to lift than the electric start version. On a GX340 the pull is manageable. If you start it once in the morning and once after lunch, this is the version to buy and you keep the difference. If you're starting it six times a day, or you work in the cold, the electric start EP5900HSRE earns its money.

Why 68 dBA is worth noticing

Sixty-eight decibels at 7 metres is quiet for an open frame generator at 5.9kVA. Plenty of units this size sit at 74 to 80 dBA, and every 10 dB is roughly twice as loud to your ear. On a renovation in a suburban street, or a job where your crew has to talk over it, that difference is genuinely worth something. It still isn't inverter-quiet, so a caravan park is a different conversation.

What 5.9kVA actually covers

Just under six kVA runs your compressor, site lighting and a couple of hand tools at once, or your house on backup with the fridge, lights, a pump and hot water going. Where it stops is your welder alongside everything else, or a big induction load. Add up what runs at the same time, use running watts rather than startup watts, and leave a margin. If it looks tight, the 7kVA EP7000HSR/E steps up.

Why the genuine Honda engine is the point

Plenty of generators at this size run Honda-pattern clone engines. They cost less and look the same until yours needs a part. A Honda Australia approved GX340 is supported through the Honda dealer network across the country, and every small engine mechanic knows it. A clone means chasing an importer while your machine sits idle. On something earning you a living, that support is most of what the premium buys.

What's Included

  • Gentech EP5900HSR 5.9kVA Honda powered generator
  • Honda GX340 engine
  • Recoil start
  • 2 x 15A outlets

What's Not Included

  • Petrol
  • Extension leads
  • A jerry can, which you'll want with a 6.1 litre tank
  • A changeover switch and the electrician to fit it

The 6.1 litre tank gives you about 2.6 hours at 80% load, so a jerry can is part of the kit rather than an optional extra. If you're wiring it into a shed or a building, get a licensed electrician to fit a changeover switch: never backfeed through a wall socket.

Not Sure Which Petrol Generator Suits You?

The EP5900HSR suits you if you want compact Honda-powered trade output with nothing to go flat, on jobs measured in hours rather than days. It is the wrong pick if you start it several times a day or work in the cold, where the electric start EP5900HSRE is worth the difference, or if you need long unattended runs, where a bigger tank is what you actually want.
