How the two-wire remote start actually works
The controller starts your generator when a remote contact closes. In practice that means your inverter, your battery management system or a simple switch inside the house does the starting. It's the standard way solar systems call for backup power: the batteries drop below a set level, the contact closes, your generator runs, charges them for you, then shuts down. If you're off-grid and your solar has a bad week, this is the difference between walking out to a shed at 10pm and not noticing anything happened.
Why 8kVA rated on a 9.5kVA alternator
The rating you buy it on is 8kVA, but the alternator behind it is built for 9.5kVA. That gap is deliberate: it means the alternator isn't working at its own limit every time your load peaks, and it copes better with the surge when a compressor, a pump or a big motor starts. Alternators that run flat out all day are the ones that cook on you. Sizing yours with headroom is why this one lasts.
What 8kVA covers, and the honest limit
Eight kVA runs your house on backup: the fridge, lights, pumps, hot water and a few tools. On a site it covers you and another trade comfortably. Where it runs out is your welder alongside everything else, or a big induction load. Add up what runs at the same time, use running watts not startup watts, and leave yourself a margin. Also worth knowing: the outlets are two 15A sockets, so drawing the full 8kVA means it wired in rather than run through leads.
Remote start, or the cheaper versions?
It's worth being clear about what the price difference buys. The EP8000HSR is the same output with recoil start, and it costs a lot less: right if you're standing next to it anyway. The EP8000HCRA adds automatic voltage regulation instead, which matters if your loads swing. This one is for off-grid and backup, where the generator has to start itself.
Moving 98 kilos
You and a mate can lift it by the centre lift point, or a hoist takes it in one go. Gentech also list an optional raised wheel kit with two handles and two wheels that suits the R/S-V2, which makes moving it around your shed or yard a one-person job.
