Why welders ship without leads
It catches people out every time. You unpack a welder generator, find the lead sockets on the panel and no leads in the crate, and the job stops. Manufacturers leave them out because lead length and size are a choice, not a default, and shipping a set nobody wanted just adds cost to every machine. So order your leads with your welder rather than after it. If you're buying a 7kVA welder generator, put these in the same order.
What eight metres of reach is worth on a real job
Short leads make you move the machine. Every time you move it you're shutting down, unplugging, dragging and setting up again, and on a fence line or a job with a few repairs spread around a yard that's most of your morning. Eight metres from the machine means you park once and work in a circle around it. It's also enough to keep the generator outside a shed while you weld inside it, which matters more than reach does when you think about exhaust.
The clamp is the half nobody thinks about
Everyone looks at the electrode holder and forgets the earth clamp, and the earth is where most bad welds start. A clamp that won't bite through mill scale, rust or paint gives you a poor return path, and the symptoms look like everything else: the rod sticks, the arc wanders, the bead runs cold. Clamp onto clean, bare metal as close to your weld as you can get, and check the jaws are actually gripping rather than just resting on the job.
Looking after leads so they last more than a season
Two habits do most of the work. Coil them loosely rather than pulling them tight around your elbow, because sharp kinks break strands inside the insulation where you can't see it and the lead quietly gets hotter every job. And keep them off wet ground and away from where a ute is going to reverse over them. A lead that heats up under load is telling you something is damaged, and the fix is replacement rather than tape.
