The Owner's Insights on the Thule Hold-Down Side Strap Kit

Two 3 metre straps and the pegs to go with them. They run from your awning's support legs to the ground and stop your whole awning lifting when the wind gets underneath it.

This is the accessory that saves awnings. Wind damage almost always starts with your awning lifting and snatching, and a strapped-down leg simply can't do that.

Genuine Thule, model 307916. It fits your Omnistor and HideAway awnings, plus the Omnistor Caravan Style and the 2000. Comes with its own storage bag.

Why You'll Love the Thule Hold-Down Side Strap Kit

  • Two 3m straps. Enough length for real ground.
  • Ground pegs included. Nothing else to buy.
  • Attaches to the support legs. Where the load actually is.
  • Stops the lift. Which is what causes the damage.
  • Fits Omnistor and HideAway. Plus Caravan Style and 2000.
  • Genuine Thule part. Model 307916.
  • Storage bag supplied. It stays together in the boot.
  • Two minutes to set up. Peg, tension, walk away.

How wind actually wrecks an awning

It's almost never a single gust that tears your fabric. What happens is the wind gets under your awning, lifts it, and then it drops back down. Do that a few hundred times over an afternoon and your arms bend, your mounting bolts work loose and your seams start to go. Strapping the legs down removes the lift, which removes the whole cycle. That's why a hold-down kit is the cheapest awning insurance you can buy.

Why it goes on the legs rather than the fabric

Some universal kits throw a strap over the top of your awning, which pushes down on the fabric and stresses it exactly where you don't want stress. This kit attaches to your support legs, so the load runs through the frame and into the ground the way your awning was designed to take it. Your fabric does nothing but sit there. That's the difference between a genuine Thule part and something that nearly fits.

Getting the tension right

Peg your strap out at an angle away from your van rather than straight down, because a strap pulling straight down does very little against lift. Pull it firm but not banjo-tight: you want your leg held, not pre-loaded. Then check it again after an hour, because guy straps always settle and pegs work loose in soft ground. On sand or loose soil, longer pegs or a sand anchor will do more than more tension ever will.

It doesn't turn your awning into a storm shelter

Worth being honest about this. A hold-down kit dramatically improves how your awning copes with your normal windy afternoon, and it will not save it from a proper front coming through. Thule's own advice, and ours, is to roll your awning away when the weather genuinely turns. What this kit buys you is confidence in the conditions you'd otherwise spend the afternoon watching nervously, plus a bit of margin if a gust catches you out.

Does it fit your awning?

It's designed for the support legs on your Thule Omnistor and HideAway awnings, and it also suits the Omnistor Caravan Style and the Omnistor 2000. If you're running a 5200 or a 6300, you're covered. Check your model before you order, or ring the store on 03 7056 6732 and we'll confirm it against what you've got.

What's Included

  • 2 black straps, 3m each
  • Ground pegs
  • Storage bag

What's Not Included

  • An awning
  • A tension rafter
  • Sand anchors or long pegs for soft ground

The pegs and the storage bag are both in the kit, so there's nothing else to buy. On sand or soft soil you'll want longer pegs, which we can sort separately.

Not Sure Which Awning Accessory Suits You?

This kit suits you if you've got a Thule Omnistor or HideAway awning and you'd like to stop watching it every time the breeze picks up. It's the wrong pick if what's bothering you is sag rather than lift, where a tension rafter is the part that fixes it. Call the store on 03 7056 6732, or send an SMS to 0476 330 590.
