How Big of a Generator Do I Need to Run 2 Freezers and a Fridge?
The answer to what size generator to run a fridge and two freezers is about 2kW, if you start them one at a time. All three starting together needs more than 5kW. Smaller generators cope if you avoid that overlap.

The overlap is the whole story. Get it right and a light inverter keeps your meat frozen through a long outage. Get it wrong and the generator bogs down at 2am when the compressors kick in together.
This goes deeper on the fridge and freezer section of our generator size guide.
Fridge and Freezer Watts
Running Watts From the Nameplate
Queensland's Electrical Safety Office puts a typical fridge or freezer at about 180W running. So a fridge and two freezers use around 540W once they're going, which isn't much.
Your own units could be higher or lower, so check the compliance plate. If it only gives amps, multiply by 230 to get watts.
A poster on the Bunnings Workshop forum did exactly that. Their fridge plate read 2A and their freezer 0.5A. A reply worked the pair out at about 575W running.
Compressor Start-Up Surge
Starting is the hard part. The same Queensland figures put a fridge or freezer at about 1,800W to start, and warn that motor appliances can draw up to ten times their listed wattage for that moment.
In the Bunnings thread, the reply used five times as a worst case and got close to 2,900W for both starting at once. At the regulator's ten times, it would be double that.
Generator Size for a Fridge and Two Freezers
Starting Them One at a Time
Plug the first one in and let its compressor settle, then the next, a few minutes apart. The worst moment is one compressor starting while the other two run. That's 1,800W plus 360W, or 2,160W.
Any generator with a starting rating above that gets you going. Owners back it up. On Whirlpool, one poster ran three fridges off a Honda EU20i on Christmas Day, from 6pm until after 10pm, without trouble.
Compressors Cycling On Together
Starting them one at a time doesn't fix everything. Fridges and freezers switch their compressors on and off all night to hold temperature, and hours later two can cycle on in the same second.
Two starting together while the third runs needs about 3,780W. All three at once needs 5,400W. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, a small generator stalls or trips.
Surge Capacity of Stocked Generators
| Generator | Running | Starting | Covers on the Queensland figures | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyundai HY2000Si | 1,600W | 2,000W | Short of one start (2,160W) | $698.50 |
| Westinghouse iGen2250 | 1,800W | 2,250W | One start, 90W spare | $1,289 |
| Champion 2.5kVA inverter | 1,900W | 2,500W | One start | $999 |
| Westinghouse iGen2600 | 2,200W | 2,600W | One start | $1,799 |
| Westinghouse iGen3750S | 3,000W | 3,750W | One start, just short of two | $2,239 |
| Westinghouse iGen4500AS | 3,700W | 4,500W | Two together | $2,249 |
| Westinghouse WHXC7000 | 5,500W | 7,000W | All three together | $1,859 |
Ratings and prices come from each product page, checked 14 September 2026. Your appliances will differ from the regulator's typical figures, so treat this as a guide and check your own plates.
The pattern is clear enough. A 2kW to 2.5kW inverter works if you're careful at start-up. The iGen4500AS covers two compressors cycling together. The WHXC7000 covers all three, but it's an open frame at 80 dB(A), so it isn't one for a quiet street.

Running a Fridge and Two Freezers Through a Blackout
Fuel Use at Low Load
540W is light work. On a Champion 2.5kVA inverter it's under a third of the 1,900W running rating. Our fuel consumption figures put that unit at 0.35 litres an hour at quarter load, or about $17 of petrol a day at early September 2026 prices.
The Westinghouse iGen2600 lists 11 hours at 450W from its 5 litre tank, so it gets you through the night. If you'd rather compare quiet units, see the best inverter generator guide.

Running Freezers in Shifts
You don't have to run everything around the clock. Queensland's regulator notes that freezers hold their chill for hours if they aren't disturbed.
So run the fridge and freezers for a few hours, keep the doors shut, and give the generator a break. Let it cool down before you refuel, which Energy Safe Victoria says to do every time.
Leads and Safe Placement
Keep the generator outside in a well-ventilated spot. Energy Safe Victoria warns that carbon monoxide from a generator indoors or in an enclosed space can kill very quickly. It also says to use heavy-duty leads rated at least equal to the generator.
For most setups, it's a 2kW to 2.5kW inverter and some patience at start-up. Pick a 4.5kW to 7kW unit if you'd rather not think about it. Browse generators for home to compare.
