What Would a 3 kVA Generator Run?
A 3kVA generator runs a fridge, lights and one big load at a time, like a microwave or caravan aircon. Exactly what a 3kVA generator will run depends on its badge, because generators are sold on different numbers.

3kVA Generator Ratings
kVA, Running Watts and Peak Watts
Three different numbers get printed on 3kVA-class generators, and they aren't interchangeable.
Open frame units are often badged in kVA. Gentech lists its EP models at a 0.8 power factor, so its 3.4kVA EP3400HSR works out to about 2,720W. Inverters are usually named after their peak. The Westinghouse iGen3750S peaks at 3,750W and runs at 3,000W.
Then there's the Hyundai HY3500i, sold as 4.3kVA. It runs at 3,000W and peaks at 3,500W, which puts it in the same class as the others.

What a 3kVA Generator Runs
Home Blackout: Fridge, Freezer, TV and Lighting
Queensland's Electrical Safety Office puts a fridge or freezer at about 180W running and 1,800W starting. It lists a TV at up to 180W and a globe at 40W to 100W.
A fridge, a freezer, the TV and five globes add up to about 1,040W running. Add one compressor starting and you need about 2,840W for a moment. A unit running at 3,000W with a 3,500W peak handles that. A 2,700W open frame with no published peak is a tighter call.
Energy Safe Victoria says a 2,000W generator runs a standard fridge, a microwave or a kettle, but may not run all three at once. A 3kVA gives you room for the fridge plus one of the others.
Run it through extension leads to the appliances, never into a wall socket. Energy Safe Victoria warns that feeding a house that way risks backfeeding the network, and any change to house wiring is a job for a licensed electrician.
Caravan Aircon on a 3kVA Generator
This is where 3kVA earns its keep. On Prospecting Australia, a caravanner found their Honda 2kVA working flat out on the van's aircon, while a GenQuip 3kVA inverter ran it with ease. Another poster in the thread recommended 3kVA for aircon and said 2kVA units struggle once it's over 30 degrees.

Power Tools on a 3kVA Generator
Drills, grinders and a drop saw are fine one at a time. Queensland's regulator says motor-driven gear can draw two to 10 times its rated load when starting, so check each tool's plate and run the big ones separately.
Check the outlets too. The Genelite GH2700 has two 10A sockets while the EP3400HSR has two 15A. A 15A plug won't fit a 10A socket, which matters if your compressor has one.
Loads a 3kVA Generator Won't Run Together
On the Queensland figures, a coffee maker pulls 1,750W to 2,400W and a microwave up to 2,000W. Run both and you could be at 4,400W, well past any 3kVA unit. The kettle and microwave together can be the same story.
A large split system at home is out of reach entirely. Its start-up can hit 30,000W.
Choosing a 3kVA Generator
Inverter for Camping and Caravans
For the van or the camp, go inverter. The HY3500i is 23kg with wheels and runs at 60 dB(A) at 7 metres. The iGen3750S has push-button start and a wireless remote. The HY3500i lists 5.5 hours at half load from a 6 litre tank, and our fuel consumption figures put it at about 1.09 litres an hour at that load. Open Frame for Tools and Backup
For the shed, a job or a blackout, an open frame costs less for similar output. The WC-P3750 is $989 with a 15 litre tank, and it lists 24.6 hours at quarter load. The EP3400HSR is the Honda-powered pick at $1,239, with 15A outlets. Its 3.1 litre tank lasts about 2.3 hours at 80% load, so keep a jerry can in the ute.
